I need to replace a near deceased L200 pickup for towing duties.

Given the current uplift in prices on pickups and not being willing to pay the same price today for a 2015 L200 that I could have bought one at in 2018 I've be thinking outside the box about a stopgap car for a few years to tow.

I've saw a few 03/04/05 L322 range rovers in the £3k mark and also a few VW Touaregs in this price range. Most of the touaregs are 2.5tdis which from a bit of googling are not the one to have so I'm kinda torn between the 3.0 Range Rover and the few and far between 3.0 V6 Tdi.

Don't want to buy anything younger than a 55 plate due to the tax band changes on the 06 plates.

I'm assuming the l322 will be a complete money pit at this price point and the vw not as bad? Is that the realty? Only downside I can see of the touareg is the tyre size limiting the options regarding an all terrain tyre.

Has anyone bought either of these vehicles at this price point and been pleasantly suprised by the lack of issues?

A knackered , ancient £3k Range Rover will be about as reliable as a Nigerian bank account.

Shoguns are complete alcoholics on diesel.. Plus any shogun in that price range will have had the arse pulled out of it..plus they can be a bit rotty.

Was thinking a l322 would be a complete money pit at any age but just wondering if anything major goes wrong on the touaregs as I've never read anything overly bad about them.

Whatever I buy will spend its life coupled to a 12*6 livestock trailer.. Just trying to think outside the box for a decent 3500kg towcar that hasn't been affected by this bubble of increasing second hand car prices.

Subaru forester or outback?

Edit: seems subaru only rated to 1800kg

I was also looking at shogun the other day, some nice face-lift ones for around 5k. Buy one without tow hitch...
