I've tried using parkers and other sites to try and search for a used hatchback ( or maybe small estate ) with a big boot but they only give overall volume of course and I need one which has the height and depth needed for 2 large dogs. A lot have good volume but sloping roof etc which is not suitable

I only want a petrol one, preferably under £3000. I would consider a 4x4/suv etc but as my kids will be sharing it I ideally wanted as small a car as possible due to parking etc

Any help if possible with such a broad question !

You need an estate ... but a small one, try a Skoda Fabia estate or even a Clio

I feel a boxy estate or an MPV is most suitable.

Honda Accord petrol - the model that started in about 2003. You can get 2.0i or 2.4i

Honda CRV? 2.0i petrol or 2.2CDTi

Ford C-Max Mk1 or maybe a Focus estate mk2 (both from 2005). Avoid the 1.6TDCi.

Skoda Octavia.

With too large dogs I would go with a small estate vs a hatchback. Lower access to get in, and also there won’t be a load lip.

Look at something like a V50, Focus Estate or Astra Estate. All did petrols, should be plenty to choose from.

You could also look at a BMW E91, Audi A4 avant if you want premium

If you are against an estate and prefer a big hatch what about a vauxhall signum or a fiat croma, neither are exciting but have big boots for hatchbacks

Nissan Note. Magic sliding seat makes quite a large boot area. Cheap as chips, easy to park and reliable. We have had ours for nine years and done almost 70k miles in it (90k in total) only needed a new battery last year... And that is the only 'issue' we have had, other than consumables and servicing.

My missus wants it to die, but it is a cockroach of a car. MOT next week, though.....

We have the diesel version with various options (satnav, part leather, parking sensors, etc) and they do decent petrol versions too.

Skoda Roomster?

Looks are challenging or funky depending, but I think it ticks most of your boxes.

Surely the Skoda Roomster is the perfect answer to your question, seeing as it's basically a Fabia with a big boxy bit on the back?

Thanks for the boot dimensions tool

Tried it as an example with a MK4 golf but it didn't appear in the list

Is it only for newer cars ie post say 2008 ?

cheers
