Anything out there? 100 miles a day, needs to be fairly quiet cabin but frugal. Purely used for the work commute. My imagination doesn't stretch much beyond the likes of a Focus or a Golf as somewhere in which it would be reasonably comfortable.

Budget is £8-10k

If you want a car that's low on NVH I'd go a size bigger (if you can find something that fits the other criteria) as you'll get nigh on the same fuel economy but in general these cars will have lower NVH making your 100 mile commute more relaxing.

At 100 miles a day you'll also want something with low miles (less than 60k) too which may mean you'll end up with a Focus sized option, with the smaller engined diesels they have shorter gearing which doesn't suit long motorway runs.

Are you going to be going anywhere near ULEZ areas?

DS5 some don't like these but they're a good car with a nice reliable drivetrain:

The 508 GT is a very refined car, not especially frugal but the ride is rubbish on those 19's I replace mine with a Mk4.5 Mondeo and its a better car in always except refinment.

I've got a 1.6 diesel Focus for commuting and I'm very pleased with it.

I'd perhaps of got the 2.0 in hindsight but £20 tax is nice for a car i don't care much about that is purely for commuting.

An Audi A3 sport back is a nice alternative to a golf the.1.6 TDI is one of the most fuel efficient engines I've driven! It's magic how little it drinks and it's very quiet/comfortable at motorway speed too.

Volvo S60 is another great car I would choose the 1.6 if purely for commuting. Quiet, Very comfortable cruiser especially if you opt for an automatic.

If you want something with a little more poke the 320D is a great choice, fast, good on juice, quiet at cruise. Only issue is the ride is a little firm and crashy due to those runflat tyres and not many toys as standard.
