Considering a GTS 4.0... Will I get laughed at?

Hello all.

I'm in the mooching about phase of looking for a replacement car, and I quite fancy a Cayman S or a Cayman GTS 4.0. Once both are specified to my liking, there's only about £7k in it - £68 vs £75k. So some test drives are required.

Before I make a fool of myself at the dealer for not knowing the rules, is the GTS 4.0 one of the cars one needs a Porsche history to buy? The website allows you to configure one up and send it to the dealer, but for someone new to the brand, I'm not sure whether it's as simple as that.

Really depends on your age.

If you are in advanced years you may be unlikely to live to see the delivery date..

Ring round some OPCs but lead times are increasingly lengthy due to the well known issues.

Fair enough. I'll do that then given it's not a definite "look at this idiot" type of no. Do you have a rough idea what times we're talking? I'm in no particular rush, but I'd need to be obsessed with it to wait 12-18 months from the order point. Preferences change too frequently for that.

Also agreed that the GTS will hold its value far better, which was in my mind. Although, to be honest, I really don't want to be picking cars based on which one holds its value better. Depreciation is a factor for sure, but it's not the be all end all. I'm after a car I like in the first instance. Plus, both will likely be better than the other front runner - Giulia QV .

I asked a similar question of the OPC before ordering a GTS 4.0 - they told me they will take orders for these models in the same way as the base or the S, so no special arrangements. I placed a deposit in early September and was quoted 9 months approx for delivery then (time will tell if that holds true!). I presume the quoted time may vary slightly between dealers, depend on how many cars they get and the length of the list when you place the deposit. I considered the flat 4 also but just preferred the engine noise in the GTS when i drove it and felt it would hold value better.

That's good to know, and congrats on the GTS! I've been playing about on the configurator and the options list is insane. I'm getting a bit of the paradox of choice syndrome.

I have spoken to my 3 closest OPCs and, whilst they've all been very friendly, they are quoting a 12 month lead time on both the S and the GTS. Good news in that I get to pick the one I want, rather than being forced into the one I can have, but 12 months seems like an age. Maybe that's just the Porsche game. I could get approved used, but I'm finding 1 year old < 10000 miles examples are the same price as the new one I specified West London OPC said they don't even have a 718 demonstrator in at the moment due to delays.

I guess I've got some time to mess around with the configurator... If I do put a deposit down, I'm thinking I could pick up a leggier, base Cayman in the meantime to get a real feel for the car whilst I wait. Probably wouldn't lose much on it.

Its awful Porsche have conditioned the GB market like this and we accept it like lemmings.

Above so true. Who doesn’t get distracted waiting for one of these for a year plus? Id assume if there’s say 8 ahead of you at least 3 would drop out when offered their place?

I cancelled my GTS 4.0 preorder earlier this year due to any lack of comms from Porsche on delivery timelines for several months.
Snatched a good old used manual Boxster 981s at half the price, very happy.

Deposit and name on list late Sept for build scheduled for Sept 22. Build brought forward a fortnight ago to Feb 22 so hoping for a locking in of spec on 1st Feb. There were differing tentative build dates for the different Cayman 718's when I first asked.

Wow that is fast. I was told around 12 months for both S and GTS when I enquired at a few local OPCs. Maybe production is speeding up.

Think that's what I'll end up doing. As per my other thread, I'm on the hunt for an 981 S or GTS. Hopefully as the months draw in I can pick up one for decent money.
