Now that we have the new £100 swipe/scan limit, is it possible to have my limit lowered as i am not happy with it ?
I bank with Barclays and also have a Balclaycard.

If Barclays wont do it, are there any banks that will offer a lower limit ?

Not that it matters but why aren't you happy with it?

I love this, now I can fill my car using my phone to pay.
I just don't use cash anymore.
Bring it on!

Have you tried asking them?

Anyway several banks do appear to offer what you want https://www.which.co.uk/news/2021/09/which-banks-w...

Can't answer for the OP, but I'm not happy simply because of risk.

In my wallet I've got 3x debit cards (current account, account for household bills and my company card) plus my credit card.

So, at best I'm walking around with the equivalent of £400 in cash, but I can't remember the last time I had to enter the PIN, it used to be quite frequently. So if I drop, lose or have my wallet stolen, a 'wrong 'un' could easily do me for a few grand before I'd notice, and I'm liable for that up to the point I contact them all to report it missing.

Okay, it's perhaps not that much more than a risk then when the limit was £10, £30, or £45, but I'd hope that should a 'wrong 'un' got hold of my cards and started to spend quickly and in places I usually don't, some kind of algorithm would notice and request a PIN.

I remember back when Debit Cards were becoming a 'thing' (Switch I think it was originally called) one of the big selling points was avoiding being a victim of crime, but we seem to have gone back the other way. £100 isn't an inconsequential amount of money, and I'm sure we'd be amazed how quickly a criminal could empty our accounts with £100 contactless purchases.

This £100 limit has been the final straw for me. I'm planning to turn off contactless payments on all of my cards (I think it can be done) - it's hardly a hardship to use a PIN and I've also got ApplePay.

I use Apple Pay on my phone. It has a huge limit (sometimes reduced by the merchant) but it is way more secure than a contactless card as clearly you can only use it if you enter the passcode, use touch or face ID. It's also much more convenient as you don't need to a wallet with you!

Most banks apps have push notifications that you can enable to your phone for transactions.

An alert comes through for a shop you haven't just been in? In less than 30 seconds you can: Login to the app, suspend the card, report the transaction as fraud, and eventually get the money back from the bank.

Except that as long as you haven't been negligent (i.e given your card to someone to use) then you would not be on the hook for any of that, fraud protection includes contactless payments so in your scenario all of your money would be returned, also a lot of banks have various measures in place that would spot unusual activity like this and contact(less) you.

Also turning off contactless on all your cards will stop Apple Pay from working (ask me how I know)

Also I did giggle at this: "This £100 limit has been the final straw for me." god damn banks making things easier for the consumer, how dare they!

ETA - However I accept its your money and you can chose how you transact it and how much risk you are willing to take with it beer

Yes, as above, the phone is the way forward.
Face recognition or fingerprint to open the phone then kerching, item paid for, then lock the phone again.
Don't need to risk carrying a wallet with everything in it.
Just keep a couple of Tens/Twentys hidden in the car somewhere.

I don't use contactless(tap) payment at all, as it has never worked on my card, I am ok with this, i also don't use Apple pay either, can't see the point of it as I am never without my wallet.

Not yet as we don't have a Barclays in town any more.
Ta for the link, it looks like i may be able to change it via "the app" which i don't have but i am sure i can change it in the bank.

As to why? if i loose or have the cards stolen i don't want to be a couple of grand down before it gets stopped.

Just use Apple Pay/Google pay on your phone op and leave the cards at home. It’s much more secure and you don’t have to carry a wallet.

You can set your own limit with Lloyds

Having recently encountered a car park where a phone app was the only way to pay, I think they're approaching being as much part of functioning adulthood as a set of front door keys, a bank account or a car.

Yep, it’s just never worked, not that I wanted it to anyway!

I started off disliking contactless because of the risk of £50 purchases with no PIN if my card were stolen.

Over time, I've come to feel I'd rather run the risk of relatively small losses compared to the increased likelihood of my PIN being compromised and hence rather larger purchases or withdrawals being possible if the card were stolen.

Most are easy to set to a number you are comfortable with or indeed remove the option altogether.
Remember that many credit cards will be going the same way in the future so that will need attention also.
