Hi folks I am battling a stuck oil filter housing on a 996.
I have tried 3 cup style wrenches and all slip.

Any suggestions of what I can get a good grip with and then apply a lot of force to before I go down the destruction route!?

How about some oil filter pliers from Halfords like this?

Do you have to re-use the plastic housing? You'd have to be careful not to crush it. Maybe try a strap wrench?

Rubber hammer carefully aimed at a fin maybe. Or drift it off with a wooden dowel hit with a hammer.

One of those rubber strap things should shift it though. Safer option no doubt.

Bit of sandpaper/emerycloth between the cup & the plastic?

Or thoroughly degrease the cup, coat of adhesive then put sand on the adhesive.

Might bite into the plastic enough to stop the slipping & loosen it.

Large jubilee/mikalor clamp around the cup. Tighten it down however Much you feel necessary and then tap it around with a drift and mallet on the clamping mechanism portion.

You can add a strip of emery paper underneath for extra grip if needed.

Buy the proper cup, the pressed steel ones (which I'm guessing you have) just won't fit properly.

There is a special tool available £££££. I’ve seen them so tight (on other vehicles same design) that the hex that is cast into the cap has been rounded off with a windy gun. That’s when you realise it’s been on there years. Pair of big stilsons always gets them turning, but 996 p are not the best for access granted.

I had a really stuck filter a few years ago. Tried cups and the pliers like suggested above and no luck.

Got this from Halfords and works a dream, super strong grip and undid it easily with no damage.

Of course another option is jab a screwdriver through the filter to give you more leverage.

It sounds like the oil filter is in a plastic container which he needs to re-use. There have been several mentions of a 996, does that mean it's on a Porsche (as opposed to say a Ducati)? I'm surprised they put the oil filter in a plastic housing.

I really wouldn't be hitting it with any kind of hammer or going near it with anything with a sharp point which could dent or puncture the housing.

I would get it off using an old drive belt or to be fancy a strap wrench type tool.

If that failed I'd wrap a bit of stockinette cloth around it and grab it with water pump pliers.

New filter comes with a new housing, so damaging it isn't the end of the world.

However, I'd be more concerned about breaking it off at the threads and not being able to get the remainder out making the car undrivable.
