I'd mentioned this on another thread, but perhaps these are better listed here.

Can anyone tell me the following on a 996 Turbo:-

a) Anything to watch out for - known problems etc?
b) Could the X50 still be fitted now the car is out of production?
c) How many rhd's came into the UK?
d) Any good 996tt links?

a) Nothing major
b) Theoretically, but probably not worth it - consider an aftermarket conversion. But the standard turbo has "adequate" power IMHO
c) Hundreds! They're as common as muck
d) The usual (rennlist, rennteam, pistonheads) and www.911turbo.com/

Thanks willr,

The Rennlist / Rennteam was new to me, so should be helpful, although looks more geared to the US owners.

Anyone else have any comments on my questions?

Just make sure you check the history and I would advise budgeting running the car with a warranty.

Yes but not worth it as previously mentioned. A number of after market tuners can modify a standard car to be quicker. The clutch plate of the X50 can be fitted next time you change your clutch (recommended if you modify the car). The larger turbos of the X50 or an aftermarket louder sports exhuast etc can all be fitted at a later date.

About 400 cars per year, so there should be about 1,800/2,000 about.

There are a lot of 996tt owners read/contribute to this site. If you've got any queries either we'll know the answer or point you in the right direction. For technical queries I sometimes use www.rennlist.com which has a specific 996 turbo section.

Ta for that dazren.

I'd probably go the dealer route for peace of mind and to gain a warranty and I'll give them a specific wish list to look for.

Production numbers are not too bad either.

Seems brakes and tyres are the only items that naturally need attention post track days, is that correct?

Pretty much yes. I've known some owners go 25k miles on original brake discs and others do a set in on 2 VMAX days. Tyre wise I get away wtih about 7/8k miles for rears and 15k miles for fronts, trackdayers will do less and road only drivers will get similar or a little more.

If you do buy a car and intend driving it hard from time to time, the first modification I would recommend is an alloy gearshift linkage from www.evoms.com A few people have had problems with the gearstick popping out of the factory plastic unit, leaving them stranded by the side of the road. Details in my profile in Aug/spet 04.

Thanks again dazren.

Your car history data is interesting reading.
Certainly a lot less to run a Porsche than my Chim it seems!
