Every year there is suggestion this is the last year. Every year we still do it. Sacrificing lighter evenings, which most people working conventionally can enjoy, to provide lighter mornings when most are commuting to work or school.
Over the years I’ve heard it’s to make travelling to school safer or to aid northern farmers.
What say you about this? I don’t like the fact we elect to make it dark at 4pm

The EU want to end it, there was a draft proposal in 2018 for 2021 to be the last time it happened, but this seems unlikely as the law has yet to be passed.

The way it is at the moment, small schoolkids will be going to school at 9am and coming home at 3, both in daylight.

If we didn't move the clock, it'd still be dark at 10am in various places, in order that it could be light at 4pm.

Is it an EU thing, or is it a country's choice?
Spain decided, during WW2, I think, to move to CET and they really should be on GMT like Portugal.
Other countries have recently decided, I'd thought, to stop changing clocks seasonally.

Agree - it's stupid.

If BJ could be persuaded that there are votes in stopping it then it would be stopped.

Any PBDs got the muppet's ear?

Or, if we still have to do it could we have a shorter period?
End of November to end of February?

We have to put the clocks back because we put them forward.

No, we have to put them forward because we put them back.

Exactly this, we are currently at GMT + 1 so we are only putting the time back to what it should be.

Quite

And why does everyone have such a meltdown about this anyway?

Spain has actually mulled going back to GMT more recently as being on CET, in combination with modern working hours not fitting well with their traditional cultural ways, is apparently resulting in a very tired, under-productive and depressed workforce.

Missed opportunity - should put the clocks forward every Friday at 3 pm and move them back every Friday at 23.00 (lose an hours work and gain an extra hour down the pub) - I'd vote for that smile

I’d rather have light in the morning before 9am over it being light until 5pm.

The early January morning when it’s still dark until around 8:30am are the worst, and would be even worse if it was dark until 9:30am.

Interestingly, I once heard that when the clocks go forwards in Spring there is an uptick in hospital admissions and deaths relating to heart problems linked to us losing an hours sleep.

As a compromise, put the clocks back half an hour and keep them there all year round. Keeps both sides happy smile

When I started big school we didn't change the clocks that year. Don't think the big school thing had anything to do with it though.

I think we should change the clocks three or four times a year.

In June currently daylight between about 4 am & 10 pm. Wouldn't say 6 am to midnight be better?

Whilst I can see the argument for staying on GMT all year round so the sun is in the correct position in the sky, but remaining on BST would be awful. It wouldn't get light until after 9AM and still dark about 5PM. The only time it would be daytime would be when you're at work.

I know that 90% of kids seem to get ferried to and from school these days rather than make their own way but not sure it would be a great idea to have them make the journey in the dark, would only lead to the other 10% being driven.

Personally I like the clocks going forward in the spring, I'd bring back double daylight saving, I'd much prefer a super long light evening than it getting light at 4:30AM, just think it's more practical.

Why are the clocks put back approximately seven weeks before the shortest day but not forward until more than thirteen weeks afterward?

In short, why are the dates not equidistant?
