I was always taught that when driving the steering wheel should be held at "10 to 2".
On Motorway Cops - Catching Britain's Speeders, on TV the other night, a member of the Cheshire force was filming driving at speed on the motorway with his left hand down by his side and his right arm lounging on the window with his right hand barely gripping the wheel.
Good luck officer dealing with any sudden problem e.g. tyre blow out nono

"10 to 2" is not a stiplulation on the police driving test.

Not sure why you think he was driving dangerously.

Recommendation is now quarter to 3 anyway due to the air bag being likely to hit arms at 10 to 2, but anyway, who cares?

The chances of a blow out in this day and age are beyond miniscule, and I'm sure they don't drive like that when they're chasing scrotes

Heated steering wheel in my car definitely encourages 10 to 2

I'd get cold hands otherwise

That makes sense.
Any other reason reminds me of Terry Scott driving in the 60's!

O/T.. Isn't it 10 AND 2?

How do you know it's 10 to 2 and not 10 past 10? hehe

Because you'd be upside down in a ditch!

Is the entire wheel not heated then?

I remember that Roadcraft used to advise:

"Don't rest your arm on the side window, as it lacks control and looks slack" smile

It's not a "thing" anymore. New drivers don't do it. It's about being comfortable

I was convinced my daughter had to learn the push me pull you method of steering, and although advised its not compulsory. Having control of the steering is what they look for, so steering with the palm of your hand might not help you

Interestingly I was holding the wheel in a similar manner when I had a rear blow out in a camper van. It required about 45 degrees of opposite lock to keep straight.

The time taken for me to get my left hand back in the wheel was absolutely negligable and made no difference to the outcome. I suspect for someone more highly trained than me it would be even less of an issue.
