Any ideas how to access the historic automatic backups of Google Contacts from an Android phone?

The day before yesterday I was setting up an Android headunit for my car and it asked to sync contacts via bluetooth from my phone (Nokia 5.3). The contacts didn't seem to successfully end up on the headunit, but since then they are also partially missing from my phone.

In my call history the contact names have vanished and just their numbers are stored. In my contacts list, the names are all there, but opening them only now gives the option to Skype their number - but the number itself doesn't seem to be recorded in the contact (and presumably is just being copied over from the apps in question). On a PC looking at contacts.google.com - there's only one contact registered which is one I added yesterday (before I realised I had this problem) - so not even the names as bare contacts (as you'd expect from what the phone seems to still hold).

On my phone, in the 'restore contacts' function - there are two device backups available - the headunit from today and the phone from yesterday. It says the headunit has no contacts to restore. Trying to restore from the phone's backup - it asks for my 'old' phone's screen lock (which is obviously the same as the current screenlock since it's the same device) - but it rejects my screenlock saying "something went wrong - try again later".

All the above is only applicable to contacts in my personal Google account - I have a work account too which is associated with the phone, but I didn't seek to transfer those to the headunit and those contacts remain as normal in the phone.

Any ideas how to recover these? I don't have any conventional backups of the contacts list as I was (over-)reliant on the 'seemless' Google process.

I would start by logging in to your Google account via a web browser to see what has been backed up. It's tricky to find the contacts, but they are there. Once done, if you are content, go to the Google account on your phone and choose set up and restore, bingo.

Thanks. I found them in the 'bin' of the Google Contacts app in the end - thankfully now restored (and backed up elsewhere for the future!). Cheers.
