Looks like an attempt to leave behind some of the stigma of the past and re-invent themselves. Wonder if it will catch on?

Err, no. Facebook will still be Facebook; they're changing the name of the holding company that owns all the component bits, Instagram, Whatsapp and so on. In the same way that Google was spun out of Alphabet.

Exactly alot of it is being made out of it on traditional media.

Does this mean ancillary products and servuces will reference Meta and not Facebook??

Its a parent company rename so will make no difference to normal folk. Did anyone care when google renamed itself to alphabet in 2015?

Nobody even noticed, well not those that don't follow that sort of thing.

They should just call themselves Umbrella Corporation and be done with it.

It is because previously when whatsApp farted it was a facebook problem as the parent company of WhatsApp was FaceBook. Now, it will be a Meta problem.

Re-branding of Facebook aside, it seems that the reason behind this is of Zuckerberg's plan for the next level of the internet - the "metaverse".

"The metaverse is where the physical and digital worlds come together. It is a space where digital representations of people – avatars – interact at work and play, meeting in their office, going to concerts and even trying on clothes.

At the centre of this universe will be virtual reality, a digital world that you can already enter via Facebook’s Oculus VR headsets. It will also include augmented reality, a sort of step back from VR where elements of the digital world are layered on top of reality."

Intended to be commonplace in 20 years or so.

As someone in my mid-40's, no idea if I will see this come to fruition, but I do recall in my mid-late teens modems making chirping noises, having to get off the phone so you could go online at home, Limewire (this download will take 735 hours), waiting ages for jpgs to resolve line by line so you could see a naked lady etc.

That was only 25 years ago and amazing how tech has progressed in that time - current smartphones are essentially the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Wonder if in another 25 years folks will look back at what we have now in the same way as I remember the above,

Facebook were supposed to be launching a VR world called Facebook horizon a while ago via oculus but nothing much seems to have happened yet.

Maybe it’s linked to this rebranding?

I get the impression Facebook want to expand into all sorts of new communities and virtual worlds.

Sounds like it, Ozzy above mentions it in his quote from Zuckerberg about the ‘metaverse’ and it used to be all over the oculus store a while ago but not sure what’s going on now.

Local Facebook groups are full of ranting weirdos and ok to drop in for a laugh but i’m not convinced I’d want some kind of virtual Facebook experience with avatars and all sorts of other stuff designed to gather and sell more data about us.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster and another way for people to get in trouble with their partners and employer or become more polarised and isolated.

The world we're in is pretty decent, I can’t imagine any Zuckerberg creepy data gathering metaverse would be any better.

This is not new though. FB have had these thoughts for at least the past ten years - not via VR, more via an underpinning of the internet with regard to tracking and advertising. Some of that they've already accomplished (ever seen SSO using Facebook or Google? It's that), but what they want to do now is significantly bigger.

I've not seen anything relating to this on the Oculus store, I have an Oculus 1 so not sure where that comes from. The platform simply isn't there for that. Forcing people to sign into FB was a pain in the arse though, but since I already have an account I only use to keep in touch with family around the world, it's not a big deal for me - yet.

This is not about making Facebook an online world, they have far bigger goals than something as simplistic as that!

They can't, and don't, control the Internet yet, but when you have over a billion users you can bet they will try. The same applies to Google, and to a slightly lesser extent, Microsoft. How many of you reading this are logged into a Microsoft account through your WIndows installation? It's the same thing.

It's not new and it'll only get worse.

It’s this and used to be called Facebook horizons but now it’s meta horizons or something.

https://www.oculus.com/facebook-horizon/?locale=en...

It used to be all over oculus and it’s now in the beta stage.

Meta horizon world beta . .get into that!

I’m surprised you haven’t seen it, the oculus store used to be dominated by it.

When I read this elsewhere I immediately thought of "The Oasis" in Ready Player One, but not the good version, the bad version envisaged by the character Nolan Sorrento.

It constantly baffles me how one company is able to develop and push a product that no one ever asked for, or needs, and yet folk will lap it up without question and ultimately become slaves to it. It doesn't seem to me to a be at all healthy and I can't imagine where it will all end (not well though I suspect).

You're forgetting the DS9 episode where the guy got Quark instead of Kira.
