Now I always thought that fines were meant to be punitive. Paying a fine should hurt you financially.

Unless you can write to the court and say it might be a bit difficult this week and can I have the fine reduced.

Years ago when in court for speeding I recall I was asked to bring proof of income etc which I did along with proof of out goings. 99% of people turned up had no documentation nothing so fines were minimum. So really while she clearly can afford the fine (the issue should be lying to the court), she is not doing anything 99% of others do when fined. That is how st out system is.

I was expecting this to be about inheritance tax.

Regarding the story in question, I guess the moral is that the same rules apply to everyone.

Years ago I was caught doing a smidge over the limit and had a few weeks on the driving naughty step plus a fine.

Was a bit irritated when some socialite was caught in a similar location at a higher speed and wasn't banned and was given a lower fine. She certainly had higher income than I did at the time.

Either Eliza Manners is extremely dim or there's more to this story.

As a general rule if “they are extremely dim” is available as an applicable answer, I tend to find it fairly close to the truth!

You have to wonder why she didn't take the fixed penalty, save £34 and any legal costs, very odd!
