Advice about buying a Peugeot 206 Secondhand Car

Hi,

I'm new here, and need some advice please, that would be much appreciated.

I'm planning on buying a Peugeot 206cc Convertible 05 plate that is an automatic and £1,000

I have done extensive research online, including paying for checks to be done, there's no issues with the mileage which is only 41,000, MOT only has an advisory for a tyre, and it has passed the majority of MOT's without issue. There's also no other issues showing up online with the car.

The guy has the keys and the V5, he is also happy for a pre purchase inspection to be carried out which is a good sign.

The last registered keeper was 2007, as it's had two owners which again is pretty good.

He has stated that the only issue is that the key fob isn't working and only works manually, also, he has stated that he has taken it as a part ex, but obviously hasn't registered it in his name, which I guess is fair enough.

So the address that I'm looking at the car, isn't the address that is on the V5.

Do you think that there are any issues with any of this?

I haven't bought a used car for a long time and obviously want to buy something that isn't a dud.

At £1000 that sounds like a fair punt. You seem to have done your research. The key fob might just need a new battery. Does it have 2 keys? I’d go for it if it’s what you want!

Is it being sold by a trader but as a private sale?

1000 seems an ok price for one, but have you seen the car? Checked the roof works ok and no other issues?

V5 transfer can be done online instantly - I’d be a bit wary of it not being in their name albeit possibly understandable to avoid an extra owner on the book or admin if looking for a quick sale.

Does he have a “receipt” or agreement between himself and the person on the V5?

I will ask if he has an agreement or a receipt but I’m not expecting him to have one.

I haven’t looked at the car yet, I’m due to be looking at it tomorrow but I will have a pre purchase inspection done on the car before I buy just to make sure that there are no hidden issues.

He’s always seemed honest with everything I’ve asked and I just asked him a couple more questions and he sent me this.

“Yes will let you know. I'm a private seller I purchase vehicles from a local auction that have been taken to a main dealer as part ex the main dealer then puts them through the auction. The vehicle comes with the v5 from the previous owner I have a receipt of purchase from the auction”

These have a folding metal roof, which are notorious for going expensively wrong. So if you care about being able to open it up, make sure you check the roof works correctly. And if you don't care, just check it doesn't leak anyway!

Also check the auto box works smoothly hot and cold and over the full range of speeds.


It sounds to me like he is in fact a trader who is pretending not to be. So if the car turns out to have serious problems, in theory you have legal rights, in practice it would probably be hard to enforce them. But if the car is good, then no problem.

In terms of proving ownership, a receipt for buying it from the auction seems fair enough.


If you want it you could see if you can find a local garage who will inspect it for you. The cost (£100?) may be quite a bit relative to the purchase price, but if you're sure you want this car it may be worth it.

You probably already know this as well but trust your gut as well.

You don't need a reason not to buy it.
