Is there such a thing as a medium size hatchback less than 10 years old with super soft suspension (think wallowy 1980's XJ6)?

Probably not super soft, but Cazoo reckons that the Focus is one of the most comfortable cars. One without any sports suspension and big alloy wheels though I’d guess!

I had a Renault captur hire car that had very soft suspension. Oddly the rear suspension felt quite a lot softer than the front. Might be worth a look

Citroen have had another go at making cars ride properly in that time period I think, try the C4 Cactus perhaps:

CAR Magazine said:
you’ll enjoy the sensation of sinking into those Advanced Comfort seats. They ... allow you to sink right in, Citroen CX-style. But as the miles flow by, the smooth ride really does make its presence felt – insulation from rough surfaces is really rather impressive. The edges of speed humps and other big irregularities are chiselled off very impressively, as the new dampers smooth off the worst corrugation British roads throw up.

Super soft suspension is a hard find these days....as others have said, Citroen might be a good starting point.

Thinking laterally, maybe a Volvo V40 on small wheels? Volvo's do have comfy seats, and staying clear of anything with big wheels is always a good idea when you're prioritising comfort
