I started a new job a year ish ago, and purchased a second iPhone for work use. They cover the cost up-to £50 pcm. I purchased another mobile as I wanted to be able to switch it off physically and mentally over the weekend and of evenings. In addition, I didn’t want the risk of getting my personal / work WhatsApp messages mixed up.

However, some months on and a recent work trip to Germany I’m really growing tired of carrying two devices everywhere - and I’m keen to hear people’s views on how they deal with this. I’m beginning to think I maybe better going for a single device but just turning my notifications off for work related apps. Or perhaps a dual sim - but I’m not up clued up on this..!

I have a works phone and a personal phone now. They dont pay me to be on call so it stays in my work drawer when I leave. I found myself taking calls and checking work mails late into the evening.

Only ever had one phone. It’s my number and my phone. And the more senior I’ve got over the years, the world’s of work and non-work are intertwined.

I just work on making choices and, if the thing goes when I’m on holiday, I assess who it is and act accordingly - my team, my boss (or one of his team) or one of the group ceo or cfo I answer, otherwise I hit ignore and don’t think twice.

That said, the fact we have all finally moved to the world of a message (sms/WhatsApp) to check someone is free to chat before calling means that filtering is pretty easy.

I believe the new iPhones's are dual sim by way of an e-sim.
Must be the easiest way?

I’ve never managed to get my head round how that works, as it’s something I’d like, but would also like to turn email, messenger, WhatsApp etc off to save temptation but don’t think it’s possible, so second phone it’d be.

Absolutely not.

Having lived / worked in Germany for many years and seeing most of the SMT leaving their phones / email behind I followed their lead and brought that mentality home.

It is important to be able to switch off, being connected 100% of the time doesn’t allow that.

My friends are a bunch of degenerates, as such I wouldn’t like anything paid for by my company, which handles company data to be linked in anyway to them.

I like to gamble and look at porn. Neither of which are tolerated on my company phone.

Two devices it is.

Use a 2 SIM phone. If you want you can temporarily disable the work SIM if you don't want contact from work 'out of hours'.

I've got a separate work phone.

I turn it on when I leave my home office, to either go to site (once a week) or the office (once a fortnight).

Otherwise I expect people to contact me on the many possible ways I can communicate with my PC (including via a landline style phone number).

It's no hassle carrying both as I always have a backpack or car with me. I do find it useful having access to work emails, shared files etc on the go now.

Have had two devices for years, if I'm on call or there is a critical project activity happening its no hardship to carry the second phone, but otherwise it gets left at my desk on silent out of hours.

I also take it on holiday but turned off only going on every few days at night to check email & prevent a buildup!

I have a works phone as well as a personal. We are allowed to use the work phone as our personal, but that's keeping work too close to my home life.

Some colleagues keep it with them at all times. I leave my work phone around the house and check it semi regularly. Others leave it in their van and don't check it at all. All choices have positives and negatives.

I like to keep track of what's going on, I found it benefits me, knowing what's happened during the day/night so I can prep to go in knowing what needs to be done when I get there, and also I know if a location or timing change happens before hand, instead of getting to my van, only to see work has been cancelled for that day. The drawback of having it around the house is if for whatever reason I've screwed up at work, I worry about it, but this is rare. I try to only respond to work emails in my free time if they really are urgent, and not just admin rubbish. The only time I turn my work phone completely off, is if I'm on a leave period such as a week off.

Work out how much you actually need to be aware of the happenings at work while you're not at work, and act accordingly. Some cases may mean it's beneficial to know what's going on, others may be an annoyance.

I used to have my personal number ported into company plans but in these days and 'device management' and tracking I took it out and now have a dedicated company phone. I divert my work number to this and have my work email on it. I work in IT so know what is looked at - Work devices are work devices and personal your own, I don't even check personal email from my work devices...

2 phones, Pixel is my personal phone as I've always preferred Android.
Work phone is an company supplied iPhone SE and it's quite small so easy to carry around.
It switches on at 9 and goes off at 5.

I also have 2 phones but ive now set my work phone to divert all calls to.my personal phone so.i dont have to carry 2 anymore.

The only other thing I need my work phone for is email but thats rare as I also have a laptop and I don't check work emails outside of work hours anyway.

I had a promotion some years ago and was issued with a company mobile. I had thought about saving a few £ each month and just having the one but found the company had placed quite a lot of restrictions around what apps and websites can be downloaded/ viewed. I carried on with 2 phones and its great to be able to keep the two elements separate otherwise you don't stop being at work.

Yep. Two phones.

Work one is locked down / remote managed by company IT and hence only used for work calls, emails and expensive HPI check text messages that I don’t want to pay for. Gets left on my desk on Friday afternoon and I’ll check it again on Sunday evening.

Another with 2 phones, my work one is an old Nokia that the battery lasts for over a week on one charge. It's on 24/7 and is for people to contact me. My personal iphone is used for everything else smile

I have 2x phones too... However, two phones or not, the trick is to be able to switch off and ignore.

Both phones are usually set to silent, as I work on the principle that if it's important, they'll call back and/or leave a message.

FWIW - My partner has a habit of checking her phone in the middle of the night and not 'switching off', so these days the phones are left well away from the bedroom too.

I only have a work phone, haven't had my own phone since 2002.

No reception in my house, mind you.
