A practical performance car; such as a B9 RS4 or Macan Turbo/GTS as a “do-it-all” type of vehicle.

Or, two cars, such as an XKR (150) or 996 Turbo as a 'sporty-gt', for high days and trips away, so decent comfort for long journeys plus a hatch-back for daily stuff.

My criteria...

Decent comfort for long journeys – ride quality and cabin noise.
Great car to drive on the way and when we get there
Decent luggage space for week or two away
Not too expensive to run
Won't depreciate too much if possible
Auto for health reasons
Reasonably quick

Thoughts please PH chums?! smile

Cheers

40 would be good; more 'wife-friendly'!... but up to 50 if I'm lucky / a good boy!

Cheers

I'd go two cars & they would be the either XKR 5.0 for high days & holidays, for me the XKR is underrated it's a good drivers car, the F Type is another option but it's not as good a GT as the XKR.

Or the CL500/SL500 not as good a steer as the XKR but they tick every other ox although the Jaguar will be slightly cheaper to run.

4.7TT CL500

5.5 SL500

A6 Allroad for daily duties:

Or If a hatcback is fine the 2.0T Q30 Sport can work:

I personally prefer the two car route, rather than the one car do it all route. I tried the one car do it all route, and that didn't work for me.

I'd always followed the one car route until I bought a low 2-seater in 2014.

I knew it wouldn't work as an elderly parent taxi so I bought a sheddy hatchback which did the job but was just misearble to drive, so within 6 months I upgraded it to a straight 6 RWD hatch which was fun in it's own right.

I'm still running 2 cars now even though I'm the only pensioner it needs to transport. laugh

For me now having just one car would always mean some sort of compromise.

I think, for me a (auto) 911 of some description (996T, 997C, 991C) up to 40k-ish!... plus a hatch would be the option, but only if a 911 would be comfortable enough for me for long journeys - my health is far from good, and I need decent ride comfort and a low-ish cabin noise. Could always change suspension/add sound deadening I suppose!

If a 911 won't fit the bill, then I'm thinking maybe a Macan (GTS or Turbo) may well cover the comfort/practicality and performance and probably be less to run than having two cars? rotate

Cheers

Having this exact debate at the moment (albeit I have the added complication of having to consider a new baby arriving soon!); what about something like a Giulia Quadrafoglio?

Not as overtly compromised as a super SUV but more practical than a 911 - could easily get a 2016/17 model for low 40s or a post 2018 car for c.50k if you want things like Android auto and ACC. Maybe get a slightly older one and use the leftover cash for a set of decent winter tyres and you'll be pretty much sorted.

An M3 or RS4 would probably do a similar job but they don't have quite the same level of sportiness as the QV.

Yes, I'd considered one, and it did appeal - liked the styling, performance etc and the good reviews, especially regarding ride quality, but my concern would mainly be traction, especially in the wet. I didn't like the constant wheel spin in my old Alpina B3, and the Alfa has a chunk more power!

Also, I'd read varying reviews regarding quality; some had a fine experience, others not so fine!

If comfort is up there on your list again I'd say GT cars are the pick, a Macan GTS will have a fairly stiff ride due to it's setup.

Maserati GranTurismo S comfortable nice ride & feel very special at low speed as well as when you up the pace:

We have a 640d at the moment, so "similar-ish" to the GranTurismo and XKR (two door, low slung coupe) and I was hoping to get something smaller, for ease of use on lanes, car-parks etc. Although, I do appreciate that the bigger cars are the more comfortable ones!

I'd also prefer a more upright driving position; I find the low seat/long bonnet makes placing the car more awkward. Hence leaning towards a 911.

Both nice cars though and worth further consideration.

The Macan GTS is obviously more "handling oriented" than the Macan Turbo, but both cars can have the optional air-suspension, which I would've thought would offer more comfort than most coil-spring set-ups???
