The rejuvenation of delinquent musical days long gone continued apace yesterday when, having been dragged by she who must be, into the architecturally acceptable face of retail torment, aka Chester, I took a sharp left whilst M&S beckoned and mixed it with the pierced lip brigade in HMV.

Desperately seeking inspiration to have a punt on anything that I'd even vaguely heard of since 1983, I reckoned a frittering of three or four blue notes on the dubiously named Queens of The Stone Age and presumaby 'safe bet' stature of GnR leftovers in the form of Velvet Revolver would raise a smile.

To hedge things, a quick dab of some remastered Diamond Head from 1980 - material which had always been sinfully absent from the collection hitherto - was snapped up from the 'please buy me' bargain bucket.

Later that night, working on the computer, I decided to multi-task and mix headbanging with system adjustments.

And what a result! The chaps from 1980 who had inspired Metallica in so many ways demonstrated the superiority of original material generally whilst QOTSH gave me a hit only matched down the ages by the very finest works of the seminal Blue Oyster Cult. Utterly sensational.

Then, Slash & Co simply cut to the chase and belted out a magnum opus of guitar masturbation with the sound of unapaologetically heroic, intense, twiddle melody and in the end, I figured these three disparate metal strains were as good as anything I'd ever heard, period, the end. A thoroughly ecouraging prognosis.

Earlier, I'd watched Clarkson, amusingly positioned on Top of The pops, pour some much needed scorn on the talent free tosh that had been in the charts that week and it was magnificent to see a bit of glorious 'Who' to properly emphasise the undoubted merit of his disdain.

Indeed, I could have sworn that back in HMW earlier that day, some kind of rap-grunge melee was firing out through the tannoy and was I'm sure, a complete rip off of some classic Uriah Heep from the time that taste forgot.

At this rate, Terry Wogan will be taking over from where Tommy Vance left off and may well begin a campaign of ceremoniously launching into a series of random segues from that station's oft painfully deliberate treacle of AOR blanditude, straight for the heart of a medium-rare slab of choicest heavy rock.

It desperately needs doing and no matter how pitiful, I simply do not care.

Did you use to write for NME in the late 70's?

Very good reviews i must say. QUOTSA are definitely at the top of current genre of heavy music. Might i also recommend the CD of an ofshoot band of QUOTSA - Eagles Of Death Metal - not metal at all, but very very good stuff.

Also, Biffy Clyro (first album) is a must in my opinion if youi like your music frenzied but tuneful

Has anyone heard the new Megadeth album (The System Has Failed), best 'proper' metal album in years. Metallica should take note.

I do enjoy reading your work DR. Always reminds me of the Monty Python sketch where Cleese goes to the National Cheese Emporium......

“Good morning”

“Good morning sir and welcome to the national cheese emporium”

“Ah, thank you my good man”

“What can I do for you”

“Well I was er, sitting in the public library in Thermin St just now, skimming through ‘Rouge Herries’ by Hugh Wallpole, and I suddenly came over all peckish”

“Peckish sir?”

“Esurient”

“Eh?”

“Yaw am ‘ungry like”

“Aaaahh hungry”

“In a nutshell, and I thought to myself a little fermented curd would do the trick, so, I curtailed my Walpoling activities, sallied forth and infiltrated your place of purveyance, to negotiate the vending of some cheesy comestibles”

“Come again?”

“I want to buy some cheese”

Absolute classic.

And Diamond do indeed hit the spot
