alternator for the 5ltr HELP!!

Hi Just been told my alternator is goosed on my TVR 500, does any one know which one fits because the garage arnt to sure ( typical ) they seem to think its the same as a land rover disco, but that sounds pretty vague to me, any help would be welcome, ta very much Jez

Lucas A115 or A127, depending upon age of car I think....

Couple of things; Firstly; How come the garage isnt sure which type it is it should be fairly obvious from the sticker ( if this is still on it )otherwise its not difficult to identify / find out. I take it they aren't TVR specialists?
AFAIK having recently checked this out for mine ('99 450) the serp engined chims use the A127 IM 100A unit. I ve got the part number on the computer at home and can send photos if you like.

Secondly what do they mean by goosed? Is it just the regulator (£30 and 45 min job to fit) or even the main 100A fuse - about 30p (which is what went on mine and made me think i had an alternator problem when there wasnt one).

Finally having shopped around for prices of new alternators (NEW not recon) these varied from aroud £400 to £150 incl next day delivery from one of the idependent LR specialists on the internet (confirmed by phone) , so it the worst comes to the worst don't get ripped off!

Thanx i have taken the numbers off the alternator and its a a1271 m-100a so i presume thats the a127, its needs to be rewound thats why its goosed cheaper to buy a recon one if anyone can recommend somewhere it would be helpful

Type it into google and you should get a range of suppliers, the Landy specialists seem to be very reasonable and helpful.

What sort of repair did they do Steve?
I was discussing this with my local auto-electrical people (Shorts - bit of an ironic name for electrians!) who are generally very good.
Replacing the regulator is easy and cheap / DIY, but I was asking them whether they could fix a u/s rectifier if that was the problem, they said it wasn't economically viable on that model (A127 IM)as the rectifier is spot welded to the body and so very difficult to repair and they would not attempt it. Not sure about rewinds but I would have thought that was even less practical and in any case a pretty rare failure anyway.

I nearly bought a new alternator.

Turned out to be the Fuse link!!
