My eldest (9) is currently very interested in my mechanical automatic watches.

Are there any that would be suitable for a kid?

I've started Googling and the Swatch Sistem ones might be an option, though I think the dial sizes may be too big.

Any others that people have seen?

Seiko SNK809 is a great first automatic watch in my opinion.

Crikey! They look great for the price.

Might be a bit big for him... Will size up later on. Thx.

They are 38ish mm I think. I’d imagine the System 51 is roughly the same.

The Seiko is also great for swapping out straps and such, so he can also get a few different colours to play around with.

They are a perfect entry into automatic land at a great price.

The auto Swatch models look ideal but they're not exactly small so might be too big.

Have a look at the Vostok autos, they're pretty cheap but also not overly large. I have a couple of Komandirskie watches which are under 40mm so quite small. Mine was manual winders but can buy them as autos and some cool quirky designs.

I’d go for the 420 case Amphibian as it’s sub 40mm. They have some cool dial designs and you can get a clear case back The supplied bracelets are a bit crappy but they can be made to fit a small wrist with work. Personally I’d bin it and fit a rubber strap.

Another but more expensive is a Seagull 1963 chronograph, is 38mm and for the money one of the greatest looking movements although manual wind

Cheers guys.

I've ordered a Seiko SNK809. Due to arrive Monday.

We had a bit of a look at my watches, showing him through their history with me and why I bought them etc. Most of mine have sub-40mm cases, so tried on on him and the case looked doable, so the 37mm (11mm depth) of the Seiko should be OK.

I do need to have a think about a shorter strap. Have been having a look round for a synthetic short strap...have a month to sort that out - will take a look at the one it comes with and go from there.

Thanks all.

(The Chinese ones look great too, and a chronograph would have been a bonus...but assuming the Seiko works out, it will be much cheaper. Much as he's getting into these things now, he's still 9 and stuff gets broken readily, even when being "careful" smile).

Watch arrived today.

I took a slight punt and ordered from Creation Watches in Singapore (ordered last Thursday). Did a chunk of reading up to try and give some surety I wasn't going to get turned over, but all feedback on the authenticity of their watches was good. There were some grumbles about customer service and more than a few complaints that watches often came without a box/papers etc. But they had the watch on for £67 so thought it worth a go!

Haven't needed customer service per se yet, but communication from them was efficient and effective. I was ready for the watch to arrive in a pouch but it came in original Seiko packaging (white and olive green cardboard outer sleeve and box, olive green cushion), including instruction manual and warranty card and tag on the watch.

The watch itself is brilliant, especially considering how much it cost (total was £87 including taxes and postage etc etc - all of which was totally painless). Size should be spot on for my lad, and I think even the strap has enough adjustability to fit him (will figure out a way of testing that before Christmas!). Nicely made with lovely little touches - really crisp dial, sweep second hand with a dot on one end and red tip the other, day and date windows (the former bilingual...will see how that works out when it's been running a bit....or the owner will need to learn Arabic smile), nice satin case, see through caseback which will provide plenty of fascination I think etc etc.

Am going to have a look for some of the protective film that you can get for phones as I suspect the glass could end up scratched. But I'm eally, really impressed.

Mezzanine - thanks for the recommendation!

And thanks to the others who posted. I have a feeling he might end up putting another on next year's list, so the Chinese ones may still end up here at some point!

No worries - it's always good to recommend a way of getting others into watches, no matter how young they are.

I also purchased my first watch, the same SNK809, from Creation (from a recommendation on here years ago) and my interest went from there.

I wouldn't worry too much about protecting the glass, they are pretty resistant to scratches and they are cheap enough to replace the sapphire or the whole watch if he really damages it.

There is a huge Seiko modifying scene who could replace the glass (I recommend Ben at CS Watches who posts here occasionally) or Seiko themselves are pretty good at servicing (apparently, never used personally)

The Seiko 5s are very good. I was going to add "for the money" but they're very good full stop. I was bought one when I was about 11 or 12 and it still ticks on nearly 40 years later, having survived my uni days. I wore it everywhere. It should have died by now. The only reason why I don't wear it any more is that I have other more interesting watches.

To say I had a very happy 9yr old on Christmas Day would be the understatement of the year! I think this has been looked at more than computer game screens this Christmas thus far.

The strap was a small amount too big, so had him wear it for a couple of days (to make sure it all worked as expected etc) and then made a few extra holes today.

Thanks guys.

That’s great to hear!

Incidentally I received a modded SNK’007’ the other day, from a resident of these forums.

Glad your boy has been initiated into the watch circle smile

It is already a success that younger generations could be interested in something else than Fortnite, but also to think it could be mechanical watches is mind blowing! Great parenting right there! biggrin

Youngest (5yo) really wanted a watch, just wrapped up this precious wrist candy after waiting in line at the AD yesterday*.
