eBay Managed payment
Discussion
Has anyone recently sold anything on eBay using the new payment system?
I've sold a few stuff from £100- 1000 without issue. Normally get paid a few days once I've uploaded the tracking number.
Sold a high-value item on eBay (£2500) and the payment is on hold. I've been told that it could take up to 30 days to get the funds. To speed it up I would need to upload the tracking number and get the buyer to leave a positive feedback
The buyer received the item today and left me good feedback. Contacted eBay again, and still, I'll have to wait 30 days to get the funds!
Their excuse is the value of the item is too high.
How can this be legal? I've spoken to them and they're saying to read the terms and conditions.
I've read it and it doesn't say for certain how much the item needs to be before it's held. It just says for "high-value" items the funds might be held for 30 days. It doesn't specify what value is seen as high value. I've sold high-value items in the past few weeks and funds were released without issue.

Used it last week to sell an old sofa for £300, so not high value.
Got the money instantly.
Still no idea on the fee structure though.. you just seem to get a net amount without a deductions breakdown.
I’ve never known a business to be so frigid with clearly showing the cost of doing business with them. I’m only an occasional seller though so cba wading through it all.

I sell on ebay reguarly and no issues with managed payments bit I havent sold anything for more than £50 per item.
Problem is eBay have next to no competition so.as sellers we are forced to play by their rules, I doubt there's much you can do because even if you did try to force legal action the liklihood is the 30 days would pass before you got anywhere.

eBay do have competition. Lots of it is free.
I used to sell through eBay, but now it is a last resort.
For car bits/parts I'll always try to sell through owners forums or FB groups.
For random low value items I'll sling them on FB marketplace (although that does mean having to ignore a lot of muppets).
The only stuff that I'd put on eBay is niche stuff that need bigger exposure to sell.

Sounds like the basis for getting the Ombudsman involved via complaint to eBay, followed by complaint to FO...
They're FCA regulated, and it's not like the whole banking industry hasn't been kicked (hard) in the past for similar shenanigans (cheque clearance being one I seem to recall)

Just sold an item on Ebay yesterday for £600 cash. Email today from them that fees are £77. That is steep but I could not find what the fee would be before I listed or after I sold until I got the bill.
I will think twice about using Ebay now after 18 years.
Come on, it’s not that hard to find: https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/selling/fees-credits-i...I will think twice about using Ebay now after 18 years.

Ive been selling quite a lot on bay over the last couple of months (with some valuable items), and haven't come across a payment hold. Have you got good feedback, or had any cases opened against you recently? (i.e item 'not as described' etc)
No negative feedback. Above standard rating and sold over £7000 worth of item in the past year. eBay seems to pick on who they decide to hold the payment without good reasons.

I'll certainly be avoiding them in the future.

I'm experiencing this now as well, they have a fair wedge just sat there and it seems as if the shortest possible time before a payout is 6 days?!
Again. Complain to ebay about the unreasonable and unnecessary holding of funds owed to you.Request interest at the standard daily rate for the delay.
When they fob you off, into the Financial Ombudsman. Lean heavily on the phrase 'treating customers fairly'...
I'd also (if I ever used ebay, which I never have and likely never will) be giving Watchdog a shout.
It's the same principle as when the banks backed down damned rapidly on cheque clearing times 15 years ago.
It's interest theft, on a grand scale.
I have mega feedback and have been on the site for 15 years. I complained and they just said “it’s normal and they do it sometimes”. Mega unhelpful. I just cancelled the item and sold it again a week later when a sell for a £1 deal came up.
Honestly, eBay is the last place to sell anything now.

THE DEDUCTIONS ARE UNREASONABLE HIGH.
I've been using eBay to buy stuff for 13+ years.
I sold my first ever item on eBay last week via one of their £1 fee offers - the item was a sofa set which went for £2800 (best offer).
The guy came to collect on Wednesday evening. I scanned the collection code and eBay indicated it as a "pending payment".
Friday morning and all the money (apart from the £1 fee) was in my bank account, so no holds here and I'd actually expect it more likely to have been put on hold given it's my first sale, and a reasonably high value item.

Now insisting I upload photo ID proof before they will payout!
I recently went through this. They didn't like the online account I use, Wise, so I had to open another account at a "proper" bank as they put it. I then uploaded the statement they asked for, but because the account was new they rejected it for not having any transactions on. You also get rejected if you redact any transactions. They literally demand to see your financial affairs. So once that was done, they then moved onto my photo ID. That had my middle name on it so I had to change the name on my ebay account to match.
This took weeks. The whole time I was desperate to get my funds paid out. They were useless and awful to deal with. And just this last week they've upheld a claim against me for a laptop I sold because a bit of the plastic came unclipped (and just needed pressing back into place). The buyer described it as not fit for purpose and they've let them keep it AND refunded them. I'm done with them.
