I had a couple of dashboard messages - Engine Oil/Vehicle check. I had these done other day. Now the service requirement screen only shows things that need to be done in distant future.
However, when I start ignition a dashboard message comes up saying 'Service due 04/2022'.
How many services does it need? Who sets these schedules? A cash-cow for BMW!
Since my car is out of warranty now, I am not bothered bout dealer services. How can I get rid of these annoying messages? Whats the best way forward?

As far as oil changes are concerened, not enough! That message you describe could be the MOT date?

Have you gone into the iDrive settings to see the specific service items it's asking for?

How olds the car? An mot will shows as a ‘service’, a ‘vehicle check’ which bmw advise should be carried out every 4 years is a ‘service’. But basically you’ll get a request for a service every year.

Year 2 - oil (minor)

Year 3 - break fluid & mot

Year 4 - oil (major) & vehicle check & mot

Year 5 - oil (minor) & mot

And so on.

No way to stop the countdown I believe, they’ve always had them. My Dad had an E34 back in the early 90s and it had lights that counted down, replaced with the countdown in the E39 onwards.

Because they work on condition based servicing, it no longer has an annual service followed by a biannual major service like many manufacturers used to do.

Each aspect will have a countdown to when it is due, so oil might be 3000 miles, microfilter might be another 6 months, brake fluid another year and so on. You can therefore chose to only do what it says, it you could combine some of these and do them together for more expensive, but fewer trips.

I would not leave engine oil in a car for more than 10k miles as I want it to last, so I work on annual or 10k changes, whichever is first. I will then combine this with whatever is due (if anything).

The more often the oil and filter are changed the longer the engine lasts.

On my older cars that gets done every 5000 to 7500 miles. I'd do the same one newer car with an alloy engine block. Then again when I buy a car I intend never to sell it.

Servicing is not a cash cow, it is part of owning a car. There is a reason why many cars end up scraped after 10 years and it simply because the maintenence is skipped.

If its an auto then make sure the gearbox oil and filter are changed every 15000 miles or so. Again doing this and ignoring the sealed for life nonsense will keep that gearbox running well long after those that never get serviced have died.

Every 15k for the gearbox oil seems a tad excessive. I agree that the seamed for life statement is gubbins; ZF state every 60k for their gearboxes.

Following condition-based servicing has never harmed my cars’ lives.

Nor mine.

My 130 is in 108k now and seems well enough and that’s followed the CBS. I’m doing the diff / gearbox oil though. My old 330 appears to be doing ok too, flying through the MIT’s since we sold it and that only ever had CBS.
