My other half was out in my 335i E93 & somehow managed to disable the buttons on the remote the other day, she tried putting the pull out metal key in the door but it wouldn’t move at all.
Luckily she wasn’t far away so I went to her & it opened fine remotely from my key.
We were wondering why the key didn’t work so I tried her pull out key in the door, definitely wouldn’t move so then I tried my pull out key & it turned in the lock no problem locking / unlocking it fine.

On closer inspecting of the pattern in the pull out metal keys I could see they were totally different, so I guess a previous owner or garage somehow got the pull out bit mixed up with a different car. It was a non runner when I got it, the pull out keys having been used quite a bit.

The only other thing that crossed my mind was valet keys the E34 / E39s had but I’d assume they should at least open the door!

I see blanks are easily available on eBay so I was just going to get one & have it cut but I have comfort access so it’s a slightly different key with the removable battery so I’m not sure if the pull out blanks from standard keys would fit my comfort access keys?

Luckily my other half’s key started working remotely fine again now has been put in the ignition & I pulled the battery out to check it (she was out running & I’m guessing pressed the buttons in her pocket too many times away from the car).

Might be worth visiting a main dealer.

Show them the working blade, and see what they say.

Also, providing the locks haven’t been changed, I suspect they’ll have the key code registered against the vehicle.

Out of interest, apart from the driver’s door barrel, where else does the blade work ? Is there a barrel for the boot or the glovebox ?

Good question, the key that fits the door also fits the glove box & boot. The other doesn’t fit anything, so that rules out any chance of it being a valet key.

I’m on first name terms with the local dealer parts guy after retro fitting a towbar to the G31 so I’ll ask him if they can supply just the blade…

The parts guy just got back to me, BMW will sell you just a new blade to fit into your old main key, obviously pre cut to fit (after showing them the V5) for £35.

Problem solved!
