Hi everyone,
just took delivery of my m440i 2dr coupe a couple of weeks ago. Its my first petrol engine in a long time smile
With it being a 3.0 v6 I was also not expecting much in the way of economy.
However, right now I feel like there's almost something wrong. So I picked up the car from garage with half a tank filled.
It was showing a range of 200miles, which seemed to make sense. I then forgot about all the breaking in guidelines and thrashed it around a bit.
I also filled up a little more fuel so the tank was 3/4 full.
I then drove it hard in sports and then a few days in Eco and got 211 miles from 3/4 of a tank before it went into the red.

I then filled up again 3/4 of tank and it reported range of 250 miles. This seemed to be to be quite lowish but i didnt think much of it.
But just making a few journeys, not driving hard, the range has dropped to 184, when ive probably drove 30 miles if that
Now dont get me wrong. I know ive bought a 3.0 v6. I get it.

But theres a few things bugging me:

1) I have more than half a tank right now (between 1/2 and 3/4), and the trip computer is reporting 178 miles today. Is that normal?
2) I take short journeys, driving 5 miles and the trip computer reduces by double in comfort mode. On the other hand, I have noticed going into eco Pro, the trip computer range is actually going up consistently. So rather than go down, its going up. This morning I had 184 range when i started. I drove less than a mile in comfort and its dropped to 178 range. This bothers me. But then I move to Eco Pro and drove another mile and the range when back to 181miles. I understand i will get mileage bonus from Eco but this just seems wrong and happens consistently.

The summary, in comfort, i feel the range is dropping quite drastically compared to the actual miles covered.
In eco, the range consistently increases.

Am i just overthinking or is something not quite right?

Firstly, it's a straight six not a v6 wink

Secondly you need to fill it to the brim, reset the odometer, then refill to the brim when you fill again and work out the actual mpg from that

You have an M440i and can't afford to fill up the fuel tank?

Also, if you're resetting the MPG on the car its only basing the projected MPG on what it knows from that instant, hence why its jumping about so much.

You need to give it time to settle over many miles, rather than over a few short journeys.

Thanks, yes, I stand corrected. Yes, I plan to do that but just find that if I am exhausting 3/4s of a tank and getting approx 210 miles from it, which seems to be what I'm going to get the second time, it seems pretty rubbish to me. I saw quite a ot of reviews saying this engine with Mild Hybrid battery was one of the most economical petrols in its class.
I won't lose sleep over this. Just trying to get a handle of what's happening.
Also regarding the fill up, don't ask me why I wasn't filling the tank smile I have just been so used to filling up a round figure of 50 quid.
I'm prepared for the stick I'm going to get. I don't mind. I love the car and as soon as its broken in, I'm going to really enjoy it in sports and kick down but just wanted to get some insights from people.
For years I've driven 2.0 diesels and a couple of 3.0 diesels.
So this really is the first performance car I've had, if you can call it that. Please be gentle smile

Don't get obsessed. It means very little. If you've just done short journeys in a straight six turbo then the indicated range will dip.

Sounds about right.

My old E36 2.5 could use up a full tank in 220 miles if stuck in traffic or driven with spirit.

Cruise on the motorway and I could just about hit 400 miles.

Yeah, if you really want to see what you're getting then you need to brim it and do the calcs from there.

Let it settle in the meantime. Also when the engine is run in it will improve.

Our non hybrid tech 2019 M140i does around 27-28mpg on average on a mix of runs. Around town maybe 22mpg but on very long stable runs we've had 40mpg (1,000+ mile round trip).

How heavy your right foot is will play a factor also.

Thanks for the extra info and thanks to the others that replied. It seems to me its quite normal then as I've been doing 95% round town driving.

I'm surprised no one has taken the piss about the front grille yet. But I like it........smile

No problem smile

The grille is growing on me. It suits darker colours better IMHO, but even at that i've seen lighter shades too that i'm starting to find palatable.

One thing i have found is that its making the previous gen 4 series look really old all of a sudden.

I guess its like anything new and very different. It just takes time to adjust.

I think a lot was made of it due to the American market where they are showing it without a number plate that splits it up.
I was going to get it in black but my previous car was black so went for a change. Got it in Portimao blue, the grey mirror caps, grille and wheels really contrast against the blue so really happy with it.
But yeah, you are right, it will soon become normal with time as designs change.

Its for the Chinese market apparently. They view large grilles as a sign of status.

4 door 2017 440i GC which has been run for the past fortnight on small 5 mile here / there journeys… 200 miles covered since I last filled up, 1/4 tank to go and 70 miles of range.

Then again I have done 450 miles to a tank if I sit on a motorway at 70mph.

Unfortunately the stop / start and short town driving really kill the fuel economy although for the past 5000 miles (so approx one year) the trip computer reads 26 mpg - it’s more a reflection of my types of journey than anything else. Plus I drive in sport for 80% of the time.

Thick end of 380hp and 1.8 tonnes with a tight engine and you thrashing it around = lots of petrol.

My 240i would make a sound from the petrol tank rather like when you take the plug out of the bath anytime you went near the right pedal.

You might have the same problem.

I’d say a heavy right foot is probably your key issue. Mine is an F31 340i with Birds remap so 430bhp, no mild hybrid assistance. At 75 on the motorway it’ll average 35mpg. But when pressing on I can easily get it down to low 20s - a bit of poke and it’ll drop a lot.

I have a M240i with the same B58, it’s a manual and the range is the same as my previous M4C, it’s actually pretty bad.

I never expected to be that much better and I didn’t downsize because of fuel consumption however I did hope it would be better but it isn’t at all.

I like to enjoy my cars and the reason I went for the 40i variant was for the power and noise so I like to enjoy it so I’m not complaining about the range, I’m just telling you that that is how it is.

I have my trip computer set up on the idrive by ‘trips’ which resets after about 5 hours of not driving so I get a MPG figure during every day of driving and it never exceeds 20 mpg. Highest I’ve seen is 28 and that was a round trip between my place in surrey and bicester village. I did give it some as the M40 has some nice long stretches.

I probably can get up to 40 on a run but that takes concentration and anticipation but I didn’t buy this car to save money on fuel.

I think anything performance car will have a crap range unless you drive like a saint.

My long term MPG over 1900 miles since I bought the car is 20.5 MPG.

My M4’s long term MPG over 6 months (can’t remember the miles I did) was 17.5.

The M240i has a slightly smaller tank so the range is bang on the same.

If you don’t like the fuel consumption and you want to make it better by driving slower, I suggest you get a 420d
