Anyone else given up with trying to buy at the moment?
Discussion
I have been wanting to change my 330D for something that has folding seats for a while now, my Cazoo value peak was around 2 weeks ago and has dropped by around 1k when I checked yesterday.
A grand here or there wouldn't really matter much but things I have been looking at don't seem to be dropping by a similar amount.
I have read of people selling their cars for good profits, mine I stand to lose about 1k from what I paid for it which if you had told me would be the case when I bought it I would have been very happy with.
I think people buying at some of the prices that I have seen have just accepted costs as they are, don't care what they are paying or have done well selling their car so can offset the cost of buying the new one somewhat.
Personally I'll be sticking with what I have (aka giving up) until really feel that I need to change or something comes up that I don't want to miss out on.

Not sure how long we will have to wait, but it’s clear that the used car market will remain at these inflated levels until the new car / semi-conductor situation is resolved. I’ve been considering a replacement for our family Qashqai (looking at XC40, CX-5, Q3) but the prices of one year old cars appear to be at new car price levels so the Qashqai is staying until, at least, April next year. I’ve also been looking to buy a second car as a fun run around and for the convenience but I am going to wait until prices drop when supply will better reflect demand in the used car market. Not having a car to trade in against the second car just makes the current price disparity more painful so I will have to be patient. I have friends who have recently bought a Macan GTS and an S5 convertible but they were replacing another car so they just sucked it up and seem to be happy with their purchases. Throw in the additional quandary of ev, hybrid or ice for the next car, I seem to be spending an unhealthy amount of screen time on my iPad trying to decide what to buy when I eventually think the market has deflated sufficiently. If we get to April next year and there is still no sight of a resolution to the semi-conductor situation, my hand may be forced to buy at the current price levels but I hold out hope that won’t happen.
I bought earlier in the summer, I took the view that prices were going to remain high for at least a year and might get higher still before they normalise at what may well be a permanently higher level due to inflation in the meantime.
Decision aided by the fact that my old car was well into banger territory after 10yrs of ownership and I knew that the MOT bill in Jan might equal the value of the car so it had to go.
I bought a rather more sensible vehicle than I might otherwise have done, partly because I didn't want to pay even more for a halo model.
I keep my cars until they are fully depreciated (ahem) and so the extra cost will be spread over 10yrs or so.
Tldr: if you want/need a new car now, buy one. Waiting for the prices to drop could be a long and fruitless buisness.

I've been trying to buy for over a year now and watched the used car market go to s

Really getting to the point of giving up.
Anybody else feel the same?

Cant be asked with the hassle and paying a 2-3k premium on a used car. Average family saloons, suvs all seem overpriced to me at the minute.

Scaleybrat, is there a benefit, if prices stay high, to buy new instead of used, and enjoy the benefits that brings (longer warranty etc)?
Yes, that’s an option to consider but I’m currently put off by the long lead times and some cars are being supplied with some options not available (due to the s-c issues). Edited by OpulentBob on Monday 8th November 08:38
Yeah, I think I've given up. Prior to lockdown in 2020 I was basically wishing for an MoT fail to force me to upgrade our family car.
I was initially glad that I didn't buy back then, as from March 2020 to now we've done something maybe approaching two thousand miles, but in the meantime everything I was considering has both got a year or so older and gone up in price. I'm doing a bit more driving these days, and the car is probably nearing death, but the psychological effect of the cost of older cars going up means I feel like I'm in limbo. (Plus the remaining pandemic uncertainty, and possible heavier taxation on ICE don't help).
