“ Mr Meekcom said: 'Despite coming out to the police to give myself up they destroyed my front door and smashed the back gate to pieces.”

Ye… they smashed in the front door for no reason.

Man exposed himself in public to a police officer and with evidence. Man was asked to allow police officers into property to discuss issue. Man refused.

Should Police:

a) Leave and do nothing about it. If he doesn't want to be arrested/cautioned then who are they to argue.
b) Wait outside his house for hours/days/weeks waiting to arrest it. This is a perfectly valid use of police resources.
c) Arrest him with reasonable force.

d) issue a crime number / turn up 3 days later and say nothing they can do

Thing is, for whatever reasons, try to be a smartarse, you deal with the consequences. I am sure he wanted to just come quietly with no fuss, and didnt kick off like a spoilt kid.

Sorry he is dying and all that, but why not just make life easy for yourself in your final days?

This.

Mooning a speed camera van is almost always going to get you a visit from the Police, so he would have been expecting it.

He admits he refused to let the Police in, was photographing them through the window while they were telling him to come outside, and I'm willing to bet he was resisting being arrested as well.

I find it hard to have any sympathy with a man who should have known better, yet managed to bring it all on himself.

How many sympathy words/phrases can you squeeze into one article.

Interesting... the amount of officers attending the arrest of such a dangerous criminal... By my reckoning 7.

Would be good to see the same level of enthusiasm when dealing with other elements of the community whose abode is primarily mobile and likely to have to be towed from one beauty spot to another after leaving debris and refuse for the local authorities to remove.

It would also be nice to see a similar level of force and activity when dealing with "Insulate protesters" and similar...who seem to be able to inconvenience thousands of other people with impunity...

Whilst I don't condone what the lecturer has done, the way it has been handled seems to be somewhat excessive although it is a DM story so it does have to be taken with a pinch of salt...

Indeed, six officers to arrest a dying man in a wheelchair for essentially a victimless crime.

6 officers? Slow crime day. No cars being stolen, shoplifting, stabbings etc… no let’s get that guy who showed his ass. Good grief.

What an absolute clown.

Does something illegal, then deliberately wastes police resources and time, that could be out there catching real criminals.

I’ll just bet he is the sort who whinges about there not being enough police as well.

I hope they see through the retrospective sympathy and fine him big time for wasting public money.

I'm sure it's something to do with government cuts & lack of resources.

They probably wonder why they aren't as respected as they were once upon a time.
