USA Dem Infrastructure Package mandates car "drunk sensors"
Discussion
A part of the Infrastructure Bill which went through the US houses this week contains a requirement for car manufacturers to install "advanced alcohol monitoring systems". The Department of Transport would have three years to develop the standard and then car manufacturers would have two years to implement the relevant technologies.

I suppose it'll take a while to filter through to the extent it does make a sizeable dent in the number of people killed in the US by drunk driving. Manufacturers have prototyped such technologies in the past - Nissan trying sensors in the air vents and gear lever to sense alcohol in the breathe and sweat - but they've either been easily defeated or give "false positives" if you've got passengers who have been on the sauce. There's some hint at cameras and driver performance monitoring software doing it, which would be interesting and it'd be interesting to see the people where I live get pinged for being drunk but when they're simply atrocious drivers.....

It's a weird one, and I don't usually support nanny state interventions, but in this case I'd support it if they can:
a) Make it near 100% reliable and accurate
b) Allow it to be overridden in an emergency, maybe subject to putting an external indicator light to show that and allow police stops to check
For most people who don't habitually drink drive and don't deliberately intend to drive under the influence surely it would be useful. It would stop you driving your car in a state where you could be pulled over and lose your license for a long time or injure/kill someone.

I'm not sure if this is just New Jersey, but people convicted of DUI can can get permission just to drive to work if they have a device fitted in their car that disables the ignition unless the device registers negative when blown into it
No, I don't have one
A few years ago they cost $1,300 to be installed.
