Dalgliesh's car

Could you afford a Bristol on a Policeman's salary?
(Inspector Lynley was, of course, independently wealthy so could do so)
Adam Dalgliesh is also a published poet, so presumably has an additional income from that.(Inspector Lynley was, of course, independently wealthy so could do so)
But I agree with the OP, the E-type didn't quite seem to fit with his character, although Wikipedia confirms that he drove 'a Jaguar' in the later novels (and a Cooper Bristol and Jensen Healey in the earlier novels apparently).
I've enjoyed the series so far.

Indeed. We are probably reading too much into it. The producers probably just wanted a car that 90% of viewers would recognise.
I believe they are moving the timeframe of the stories along rather than sticking in a certain era for the duration so his choice of wheels might change from episode to episode.

The series is turning into a concours classic car show, spotted thus far, the E Type, Mini Cooper mini hornet, police triumph herald, merc saloon, triumph 2000, triumph Toledo? 2 MGBs, Capri.
Not complaining but in heart beat the cars appear to be used well worn examples.
Yes this is a thing on most period tv shows now. They put a lot of effort into getting correct era vehicles but then spoil the effect because the cars are all so pristine. Surely they could fake up a bit of dirt at least, if not full blown rust;)Not complaining but in heart beat the cars appear to be used well worn examples.
He is driving a 'J' registration (Aug 1970 on) but the police cars are Morris Minors. Also read that recent episode was set in 1979. I am old enough to remember that MMs were not being used by the police as late as that. They don't usually get that sort of detail so wrong ...........or am I wrong?

It wasn't the only filthy thing, either. And I'm not talking wellies.
I've really enjoyed the last couple of series, I often forget the episodes are Thu AND Friday and have to stream on My5.
I noticed that the Escort Mexico had a black and silver rear plate. That is now legal (obviously a borrowed car) due to the oversight by DVLA when the rolling forward of MoT exemption and their use was re-instigated in 2014. [pedant mode] But they would have been illegal in period, reflective being compulsory on cars registered after 1/1/73 [/pedant mode].
it took several years for DVLA to do anything but they announced a couple of years go that this would stop; it is permitted for cars up until 1980.
