Fire engine in street last night so me and the wife were woken up and discussed what was happening. This morning on facebook a couple of ads trying to sell me a Fire blanket. Neither my wife or I did any searching related to the fire.

We have Alexa, are keywords being sent without our approval or are we somehow targeted via geolocation with neighbours? The Alexa thing is suspicious, my brother has Alexa and while round his house last week I asked to borrow some socks as I had forgotten to pack them for a function we where attending. Sure enough next day sock ads on facebook.

My son randomly brought a big bolt home that he found near school and we had a little laugh about why he picked it up and what he was going to do with it and sure enough lots of ads for nuts and bolts and building supplies? The first pic of the ad was even a big bolt front and centre.

It seems all this stuff has got very intrusive in recent years to the point I can guess what my wife is thinking of buying due to the ads I get. No chance of any surprise presents or holidays anymore that's for sure.

Not sure how Facebook would get hold of customer info from Amazon, I think it is more likely to be Facebook listening via your phone.

Maybe someone in the area has posted something fire-related on social media - location matches yours.

If you’re worried about Big Tech intrusion you really shouldn’t have Alexa in your house.

If you click the 3 dots next to the ad on Facebook it’ll give you some indication on the targeting of that specific ad.

The point is even people who don't have Facebook do have Facebook. Or more accurately Facebook has them.

It is weird and happens regularly - i.e. a Facebook ad corresponding to a recent conversation.

I have checked microphone access a few times on my iPhone and Facebook does not have access - so I am not sure how it happens. Perhaps it's via WhatsApp which does have access.

I lock down Whatsapp quite throughly though myself, no access to microphone. I guess my wife doesn't though
