Following a chat with Mr. Tree it was agreed that the PH techies might be able to help out here.
I've got 2 Sony flat screen monitors and have had a new graphics card fitted. Plug both the monitors into the graphics card (one into the normal monitor slot and one through a converter into the TV slot) but still cannot get the setup to recognize two monitors. Both come up as Monitor 1 and it doesn't seem to matter what I do, it won't change
Any thoughts?

I would assume that the TV slot is just an output for whatever is going on on the other monitor. I would say it is likely that it can't function as two separate monitors like this.

I currently use a card with one DVI and one VGA output (it has TV-Out too but I don't use that one).

I have also just bought a dual DVI card which was only ~£130... I would say therefore that a dual VGA would be very cheap if you weren't fussed about getting the "latest model".

Yep , I'd agree there. I bought a duel VGA card last night for £35 from PC World, works like a treat.
Sounds like it's the card that is the problem

VGA card isn't the graphics card then?

Yes, but the graphics card MUST be dual VGA.

I will give you the details of the one I bought when I get home.

This is the important point. The graphics card must be capable of driving two monitors independently. A "TV-out" socket is not a separate VGA port, just a (relatively) low-quality connection for a TV set to display your movies etc.

So we're saying the new graphics card I had fitted specifically for dual monitors is the problem

Can't tell you that I'm afraid as I'm not at home and I won't be back until Friday night to have a look at it. I'll post something then
Thanks

Erm, it shouldn't be if the specification was for dual monitors.

What may have happened (and it'd be a right p155er if it has) is that they misunderstood you and thought you meant 2 monitors/same image on each (in which case a card with VGA & TVOut would do), rather than two separate monitors showing one complete desktop.

If PCWorld did the PC for you - I fear it'll be the "misunderstanding" option.

You need a graphics card that specifically supports two independant outputs. Specifically, it must have either twin DVI connectors (or a single DVI connector and a dual monitor Y-adaptor) or a DVI and a 15-pin 'VGA' connector. TV-Out is not an independant output.

I for one can't really comment any further until I know the make and model of the card, and I'm sure most other posters will concur.

Edit: I should point out that you can't just add a Y-adaptor to any DVI socket. The DVI specification has pin-outs for two outputs and the Y-adaptor separates these into two physical sockets so that two independant displays can be connected. If your DVI connector only makes use of one of those two outputs then obviously a Y-adaptor will be of no benefit. That's whay we need to know the make and model of the graphics card.

Don't trust fnac either!

I bought a Y adapter initially and that didn't work. Then I noticed there was another lead in the Graphics card box that converted the other plug to a monitor connection which didn't work either.
As I said, I'm not at home until Friday. Will try and find out before then what it is but that would mean asking the wife.......
So expect the answer "hotpoint I think"

Have you got the Primary Monitor set for one and not the other in the display properties?

Ahh, wonders what the skill of reading can give you.

Sounds to me like its not a twin headed VGA card in that case.

Check the connections of course but there isnt really much else it can be, might be a configuration setting somewhere I suppose.

Dont suppose you know, or can find out, what model of VGA card it is?

If it hasn't got two showing then the chances of it being a twin head card are significantly reduced, surely?

Edit: Looks like Matt pipped me by a matter of seconds there, given that we both posted at 11:21 but his appears first.
