F31 335d new battery

I need to fit a new battery to the family 335D - it was dead after a week of not being used and at 7.5 years old it's probably due a change.
Apparently I need someone with a service tool to tell the car that it's had a new battery.
Is this true, and does it need a pukka BKW service tool or can an indy do it?

An indy can do it fine or an indy battery shop should be able to help too.

See if anyone local to you has INSTA/INPA, Carly for BMW or bimmercode (I think).
