My understanding is;

List price is 17.5% lower than the V8 model.
Don't think the vehicle can be driven as electric only. The article indicates that the electric part provides up to 3 seconds of additional power when accelerating.

If customers want a lower price and hybrid, then Aston Martin have delivered.

That price reduction may have come 'out of AML's pocket', because buying a 6 cylinder engine and hybrid gubbins from M-B, might cost as much as the V8.

As much as I know from the Chinese market (spoiler alert: not much), I believe they tend to favour image, hence looks over what you can't see, hence the engine. As long as a car look expensive, that's a deal.

I believe that there are some luxury imports taxes in China that are eye-watering. I also think they tax on engine capacity.

Considering the recent clamp-down on the hyper-wealthy by the People's Republic this may just be a way to expand the model's desirability and increase its pool of potential buyers.

I have now seen that the lower price, appears to reflect differences in Chinese vehicle import taxes.
25% for the V8 DBX vs. 12% for the 6 cylinder DBX hybrid.

Whilst I have zero interest in this vehicle, I'm pretty convinced that 5.4 seconds to 62mph is quick enough for the school run

In fact, I'd bet that about 9 out of 10 owners of this car wouldn't pass a Pepsi Challenge on whether they were driving a V8 or straight 6 version 9/10ths of the time.

Or maybe just walk or cycle to school rather than fry your children/grandchildren in hell.

I actually think that this V6 could be quite ideal for the DBX in Continental Europe. When I drove the DBX I thought that the V8 engine didn‘t suit the car particularly well. Yes it was quick but the noice in „S“ setting did not suit a large luxurious SUV. Maybe the V6 is just a better fit as nobody expects sports car performance of a 2.5 tonne SUV anyway.

It's a Mercedes straight 6 - a superb engine.

Driven an S class with it: super smooth, responsive (has small electric motor to provide torque to reduce turbo lag) and powerful enough

It appears that the advantage for AML in China, is that the DBX 6 cylinder has lower import tax than the DBX V8, so the list price is about 17% less. That would not apply in the UK. If there was an option of 6 or 8 in the UK at a similar price, which would you choose?

As said the engine is due to local tax regimes. Hardly something new. Manufacturers have been doing it for decades
