Help me before i go mad please.
Discussion
So I've had constant thoughts about getting a new car, and feel if ever i get sectioned this would be the reason why.
Been around the thought process of many cars but haven't yet pulled the trigger.
Bit of background/Current fleet:
Myself/Wife/2 year old Plus Dog.
My Daily commute 50mile round trips, mainly B roads
Wifes commute, 15mile round trip few times a week plus general pottering around.
Current fleet:
My Daily = C350cdi estate, great family car
Wifes Daily = Saab 93 aero, good car, however saloon so not ideal when taking the dog out
Weekend car = E46 M3 (not often used TBF)
Was thinking about Selling the Saab, replacing this with a 640d (Around 15k) to become my daily, and the wife use the Merc (Aware small journeys not ideal for diesel, but would ensure it was taken out on long Journeys) Having an estate is very handy.
Then started looking at M6's............yes please.
Thinking if i sold the M3 and the Saab plus the 15k i was going to put down on the 640d i am in M6 £, that was Sunday.
Monday thinking 30k on a car is alot, stick with what you currently have.
Tuesday thinking i want an M6, but the E46 is going up in value, would be silly to sell, looking at loans for full amount 30k as cheap atm and repayment circa £400/500 plus running costs is ok.
But then i don't use the M3, but its going up in value, also is the 640d going to be similar to the M6 90% of the time.
However now i've looked at M6's if i got a 640d would i think wish i got the M6.
You can see how my thought process drives me mad.
So putting it out to you lovley people, what are your suggestions?

Sell everything then (even the M3, why save it for someone else when you can let them buy it now) get your wife a car that better suits her journey type, something like these:
BMW X1

1.5T Ford Kuga Titanium X Sport
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202110288...

Or Estate wise the Leon FR Tech is a good all rounder:

Then buy yourself the M6

Purely personal take here, and I appreciate that my view won't be the majority.
First, I feel like trading an E46 M3 for an M6 would be diluting the M-recipe. There's a lot that's brilliant about the M6 but is it a better car than an M3? I'm not sure. The E46 M3 is a stone-cold classic (or will be). It's about the purest iteration of the M principles that BMW has ever produced.
And using an M6 for a 50-mile daily commute is going to be exceptionally heavy on fuel.
Also -- what's your wife's view? It's her car you're talking about selling from under her. Are you likely to get some 'pushback'?
What does she want?
It might be a more practical shape, but the diesel Merc doesn't suit her usage at all. I've found, with my diesel, that it only copes with longer journeys. A few short ones and it starts throwing an oil service request on the dash, even factoring in a longer run. (Obviously all diesels are not the same, and this might be some kind of peculiarity or even fault with mine. But worth considering, I think.)

Some really interesting views here.
I am lucky enough to get around 80% of my fuel costs paid, hence why i though it was time to get a V8 while I can.
Regarding the M3 I also echo the comment regarding it being one of the M division pinnacles and has potential for classic status.(Then l think about potential future values too........it might never be, you just dont know)
Wife is not really that bothered about cars, so long as it works shes happy, she does enjoy driving the Merc.
Also i fear the M6 is too powerful for UK roads, its very rare where i live (South East) to have an empty road to enjoy.
Maybe i might be better off, selling the Merc and Saab, getting a nice petrol estate for the Misses and the 640d for me and keep the M3. Would save me a few ££ too.
Prehaps put the towards the mortgage.

The M6 all the way then for me! I am lucky enough to get around 80% of my fuel costs paid, hence why i though it was time to get a V8 while I can.
I've only ever gone for diesel because of the perceived savings on MPG over a petrol engine. If most of my fuel costs were being paid, I wouldn't go anywhere near a diesel, and I'd look for the biggest and fastest petrol engine that I could afford to buy!

I've just gone through a similar process, needed a daily driver that was rewarding after coming out of an Alfa Romeo Giulia diesel as a company car (Covid was cruel to me) but at the time had a Kia Ceed GT for the wife and an Escort Cosworth. After alot of debate and the cossie giving me a great return I decided to sell it as I only drove around 500 miles a year in it. Ended up with an Audi RS4 B8 and haven't looked back!
The E46 is only going 1 way in value but it'll be years before you get any big return on it (there's still a few of them around) I you want something that'll put a smile on your face every day and you're not that bothered about fuel economy go for it and enjoy it while you still can!

Does the M3 not get driven often due to time/other constraints or have you just lost that urge to take it out?
If you're happy with the potential running costs Id be very tempted to get into a V8 if you haven't experienced one already...The 640D is no slouch though and I doubt it'll leave you feeling like you want more especially if you have a weekend car.
Great position to be in either way try not to overthink it.

Escort Cosworth, I would absolutely love one of them, unfortunately the prices they are seem very much out of my league.
Definitely over thinking at my end, had similar overthinking with the Merc C350 or C63, again different cars that shouldn’t really be compared, but in real world driving hard to justify the extra ££ for the cooking model. (If that makes sense)

Will you get 80% of your fuel costs if you drive a c63?
Every petrol head wants a c63 including me. But they are brutal on fuel. Like really really REALLY bad. Obviously I'm not even thinking about the turbo version but the original 6.2 or 6.3 litre.
You struck the nail on the head when you said too quick for UK roads but I would argue most fast cars are too quick for all roads. That doesn't mean we don't want them.
I've been trying to dial down the want for quicker or faster but it's hard. I know I'm a slower driver nowadays. I think if you're a bit bored with modern and fast then you need to try something older and not too fast. I still hanker after an original Fiat Panda but as I've already got 4 cars that seems a bit too silly.
What car did you really want when you were say 18 or 21. I don't mean unobtainable I mean an e30 325i or Renault 5gt turbo or similar. What car did you really want that was almost affordable but you didn't get at the time?

What do you mean they're bad on fuel I get a positively (they're all 6.2's) generous 18mpg around town & nigh on Prius levels of 25mpg on a run Every petrol head wants a c63 including me. The car I wanted at 18 when I just passed my test was a mk3 Capri 2.8, butnot keen on the idea of having to put my daughter in the back of a 30 year old Ford. I have been looking at the 996 911 for the basis you’ve noted older not too fast cars to get that engaging drive back, and also modern enough but also classic at the same time

I was in a similar dilema recently. We ran an e350 estate, an e350 convertible and I had an e46 M3. Which was hardy used. I sold the Conv and the M3, kept the estate for daily duties and my wife normally drives it and bought an M4 which I use including commute to work. I got to realise that it’s better to have something that is nice to drive everyday than something tucked up in the garage. Just my two penneth.

I had two of those back in the 80s, but thankfully only had a minor collision in one of them! I got a Z4M Coupe 2 years ago with the same S54 engine as an E46 M3, and there is no way I would want to replace it with any Capri.
