Rear plastic strip - colourcoding?

Hi all,

Another newbie here, well not quite as I pick the new Chimaera up at the weekend.

I do have a quick question though which I couldn't find in the search.

It's a 95 model and has the black plastic strip at the rear rather than the colour coded one, has anybody colour matched theirs? I would like to do this and the rear light conversion at some point and wondered how easy it was to do how I get the correct colour etc and if it would match well to the rest of the paintwork due being different material types.

Colour matching is not usually too much of a problem (although it does rather depend on your colour).

There should be a paint code engraved on the plate under the bonnet on offside of the engine. Any self respecting bodyshop should be able to match the colour given that as a starting point.

Mines a 97 and has had the standard Fiesta rear lights upgraded to the 4 pods found on the later models. It was done by the previous owner but I believe due to the fact the inside of the light is body coloured its a job best left to a decent bodyshop. The clear covers also need to be trimmed to fit and so there is a risk of scratching the paintwork in the process. The previous owner had a rear end re-spray done to blend the lights in at the time of fitting them.

thanks guys, was planning on a DIY job as I have some (limited) experience of spray work etc and have a friend who owns a spray repair shop who will let me use it over a weekend.

Does your (limited) experience of spray work extend to fibreglass cars? I understand that different techniques are employed than with metal.

no, put I'm only plannning on painting that black plastic strip that runs around the rear of the car not the fibreglass and the newer style rear lights I will be fitting which i also presume are plastic. Ijust find on a silver coloured car that strip stands out too much and looks odd, looks fine on the darker colours though and I probably wouldnt bother if i had one but would like it colour coded.

The black strip IIRC is the rear 'bumper' (is on mine) and is rubber. Later cars it's moulded in with the f/g bodywork. I think it's likely to crack if you paint it - why not leave it as it is?
