I know there's a few on here with Spanish places. We try to get out fairly often and we're spending a fortune on hire cars. Has anyone bought and left a car there?

I know of places near the airport that will collect/deliver from/to the airport and keep the battery charged etc, but it's more the purchasing process that interests me. If it makes a difference, we'll likely go used as I've got plenty of experience of Spanish drivers and car parks...

Any pitfalls or legal obligations I need to be aware of, or do I literally walk into a dealer and say I'll have that please?

Thanks in advance.

We never bought one as rentals we’re pretty cheap when we we’re there.

The people we knew who did bought a budget hatchback as it would invariably end up battered.

I would go for something reliable and with good air con, also depends on the frequency of your visits and accessible parking.

Don't you need an NIE/TIE to purchase a car?

I believe so for used cars, you need a copy of the sellers NIE and passport details for proof of ownership and any ongoing issues.

If the OP already knows someone registered in Spain who’s selling privately he will save the 16% government IVA tax, also worth remembering that the dealers charge the IVA dependent on the vehicle in question so you need to ask this.

We have NIEs, so no issues there.

Good to know on the IVA... For cash I bet this isn't an issue, if it's anything like everything else in Spain! laugh

Have you updated your NIE's under the withdrawal agreement, otherwise the clock is running out fast.....
