Anyone have any good contacts/companies to insure a groundworks company working on public footpaths etc?

a couple of things to watch out for on the quotes you get:

1. depth limit, sounds obvious but make sure you buy a policy that cover you to the depth you are digging to

2. conditions president/Warranties/Endorsements - in the field of groundwork's there are a lot of these that get added to the quote. Make sure you can comply with them, or cover won't be in force....one of the popular ones is the use of "dial before you dig" services.
