I’m lost here. Essentially my main gaming phase was ZX Spectrum era, followed by an Xbox/Fallout phase.

My 10 year old would like a switch for Xmas, and I’m more than happy to buy one. Which one do I get, a ‘lite’ or a ‘normal’?

If it helps, we’re a split family, so it will go from my house to her mums in regular occasions, which makes me think a ‘lite’ would be best?

I’m feeling old.

If you want to plug it in to a TV at any stage then go for the normal one. The “lite” is handheld only while the normal one does both. If you will use it extensively in handheld mode the OLED version has a better screen.

That’s basically what I gleaned when trying to work out what to buy for my household!

Standard advice.

Unpack it and fire it up before the 25th. Download updates and any games etc.

It’ll be ready to go when unwrapped.

Nothing causes distress like waiting for a massive update with servers overloaded on Christmas day

I'd be tempted to gift wrap a light switch as the first present.

Go for the full fat one. It does everything the lite does, and then lots more. Just need to buy an additional charger for her to take when she stops out.

100% years ago mum and dad bought me a PS1 for Christmas, opened it on the day to find it was broken, looked like somebody had basically smashed it up.

Think I finally got to play on it around the 5th Jan (my birthday is also on 30th) so it was a double kick in the teeth.

Yes this. Buy a console and games. Put them in one by one, and download any updates. Then re-pack. They often need a new user to create an account, with email and login etc etc. It can be painful to wait

Don’t buy the Lite. The beauty of the switch is the fact you can play on the TV and then seamlessly switch to hand held. If need be buy yourself an additional TV dock.
