So my 10.5 inch iPad pro found its way, butter side down, to a hard floor.

Screen obliterated.

However, it does still turn on and is otherwise functional. One of the speakers stopped working, but that is it.

Did speak to insurance about it and they are picking it up to be inspected. Though I found out the place it's going is an authorized apple repair place so I guess they're going to recommend repair and that, happily, they can do it!

If that is the case it's £225 excess to pay (combination of voluntary and compulsory). I had a look around and you can actually get the screen done for about £250-270. Another £20 for a new battery whilst it's open wouldn't hurt either.

So I think my choice will be paying 90% of costs through insurance or 100% by doing it alone. Doesn't really make sense to go through insurance. I don't think.

Does it actually make sense to repair though? Good used ones are sorta £300 ish on eBay. Do I really want to put £250-£300 into a repair for a device only worth that anyway? I'd rather put that into a new device.

I'm starting to think just selling as spares or repairs might be the best way forward. Probably net £100 rather than £0 (if I sold the repaired iPad).

If the insurance you speak of is house insurance then no way I’d claim and pay that sort of excess. Only going to bump up the cost for the next few years come renewal time.

If it were me I’d just probably just spares/repair sell it and move on. The 10.5 pro is a 5 year old model and while perfectly good if intact (typing this on mine!) it isn’t really worth repairing at big cost, in my opinion.

I’m in a similar position. Last week I dropped my ruck sack on the concrete floor in Starbucks; my 2018 11” iPad Pro was inside (in apple keyboard folio with glass screen protector) and I now have a crack running the length of the actual screen. There is no damage to the iPad case and the folio doesn’t offer any side protection so the shock must have cracked the glass.

No problem I thought; I have accidental cover on my home
insurance, and having never claimed on insurance I hadn’t really thought too much about the excess when I took out the policy. The total excess is £350, and the insurers want me to take it to Apple for a quote. I can see online that their standard out of warranty repair is £450 so it’s not worth claiming.

I plan to sell it on ebay as spares and repair when the next £1 fee deal comes up, and buy a base M1 iPad over the “black friday” weekend. An expensive mistake.

May be interested in buying your bust screened iPads as a repair project.

Not for £100 though, if they're £300 used.

But equally you won't be getting ripped off by the buyer, as I'm a nice guy smile.

I'd buy an Apple refurbished device, https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/refurbished/ipad/ipa...

The 10.5 Pro is still a really fast device, assuming you don't have any specific power user requirements. The 11" pro is also available on refurbished too. Apple refurbished devices have a new case and battery and always look like brand new, really good value if you don't need the latest and greatest.

Yes this one was a refurbished one from Apple. Total no brainer. They're so powerful now that even picking up 2 years ago iPad as a apple refurbished makes sense.

CEX is another place to try

When my wife needed an iPad upgrade I gave CEX an old iPad and an old android tablet and got £120 off a pre owned iPad with a 2 year warranty.

If you have notified your insurance don’t be surprised if come renewal it’s listed on some data base as an incident and therefore no new insurance co will treat you as a “no claims” customer.
