So with Thanksgiving approaching (Im an Englishman in New York) and not being American, nor is my wife, my friend or his partner, so thought we could skip the Turkey and have a leg of lamb for dinner instead.

So I went to the local butcher who offered a 11.5lb (just over 5kg) one for 157USD!! (120GBP) , after I picked myself up off the floor and politely declined his offer, I tried a local supermarket

Here the smallest was 13.5lb (just over 6kg!) at 117USD (87GBP)

Its been 10 years since I lived in England, so how much is a leg of lamb at a butchers or supermarket?

Are they also so large( I was hoping for a 6lb (2.5kg) one), I thought this was normal but perhaps not?

Lamb has got more expensive here, used to get a leg for £18-£20 but now it's £30 for the same size leg.
Lambs and sheep are fetching quite high prices at the sales and this is having a knock on effect.

Agreed it's getting more expensive. A quick search throws up sample London prices of £12-13/kg at supermarkets and around £20-30/kg at 'specialist' butchers.

£12 per kg at my local butcher , just ordered one for Xmas . We typically get a 3kg leg , personally I’d rather cook 2x3kg legs than one 6kg leg as that’s a big bit of meat and not easy to leave inside cooked but pink and not overcook the outside

Do Americans eat much lamb? It’s not something that one automatically thinks of. So maybe it’s seen as a niche product over there

Most good butchers are around £20/kg, and a 6kg leg is massive.

Most legs I have ever bought even for 6-8 people have been 3kg max. The ones my local butcher sells are normally around 2.5.

So your £20/kg is $28USD.... so basically the same(ish) as the UK.

In the UK supermarkets are £8-10/kg. FWIW.

Round here a leg is about £40, and we are surrounded by sheep. They have escaped onto the road and are causing Chaos this morning.

Quite bizarre that a decent leg of lamb will cost you £25 and yet a whole animal is worth very little at all including the fleece.

Lamb/hogget/ mutton is a delicious truly free range meat though and almost worth the exorbitant price.

Supermarket, about £13 per kilo - bought one recently for Christmas and it was about £33 if I recall correctly. As a family we tend to cook lamb and gammon for Christmas lunch.

6kg seems large for a leg of lamb.

I agree with the £30-£35 marker here having bought one the other wee. Also agree that 2.5kg-3kg is more the size you want (and will feed 6-8).

6kg seems like way more than a leg.

Prime lambs near me are selling up to £3/kg live (for an animal weighing about 45kg).
once killed only around 45% is usable so around £6.66/kg of good quality bought lamb price goes to the farmer. The rest of the supply chain also needs a chunk for processing/packaging/distribution etc (also of course some of the usable carcass is minced etc as not prime meat for sale)
(It’s a good market to have been in last couple of years)

Wild Fork Foods

They have quite an array of meats and cuts available

If this works out i might start to look to get other stuff there as the prices seem very good, getting a whole brisket for next spring smoking season could be a winner rather than a flat form Costco

I'm quite blessed in that my local is full of farmers but when I first moved here I remember one coming up to me and saying oi, do you fancy a lamb, thinking it was some local initiation ritual I declined. Anyhow to cut a long story short I get them for about £120 all cut up in to joints now.

Just put my order in.

My local tesco are doing NZ lamb and British beef half price on the clubcard deal.
I've just bought a full leg for £13, and a couple of half legs for about £6 each and a nice beef roasting joint for £9.
They are dated 16th Dec but I'm freezing them.
