I have been browsing a fair few cars lately and was wondering what people think is the most realistic guide to pricing out there?
This is what's available to the non-trade, such as Parkers, Auto trader valuations etc.

Case in point, i have seen locally ( small independent dealer) advertising a Mercedes C350 CDI Sport Estate on a 61 plate (early 2012) with 71,000 on the clock. Up for £13,500!!

This seemed high and getting a valuation through Parkers, even allowing for the options, its around £10,950 from an independent trader- slightly higher figure for franchised dealer.

So who's way out? Suspect the trader as i have seen lower priced examples elsewhere but.. what do you think?

I am sure Parkers have made allowances for the higher prices that have been happening for some time, so not sure traders can justify THAT much higher!

I have also noticed , a lot of private sellers asking franchised dealer prices as well- not sure if its a case of them seeing the highest figure in the guides and going for that or just chancing their luck/dreaming!?

Go and buy one for £10,950 from Parkers

Oh wait, you cant.

Autotrader will give you a range of prices available from dealer retail to private sale. These shouldn't be confused with WBAC or similar who are giving much lower trade bids

Dealers don’t tend to make a massive profit on a car, I imagine it’s expensive for them to buy as well. See what else they’re going for on Autotrader, Pistonheads etc and if it’s in that range. Parker’s are usually out by a fair way, as has been said by salesmen - Parkers sell magazines not cars

Nothing new in private sellers asking dealer money.

I usually use Autotrader and What Car valuations as indicators. They are just indicators though. Think you have to pay for Parkers mileage adjusted valuations? Also put the details into WBAC so I know what I might get if wanted to get shot of the car quickly.

A C350cdi Estate is actually a hard find but that one does seem highly priced, but also check the spec as it may have some desirable options.

If you can find similar for less then maybe use that as a negotiation tool but it may just be the dealer bought at the wrong price & he's trying to minimise their losses.

Anyway if you don't mind traveling a bit further this one looks decent:

Yes, i used the paid for service with mileage adjustment.

The figure i had in mind for selling my runabout privately (£3100) is bang-on what Parkers list - against a £2500 offer from WBAC.

Looking at the other stock the trader's got, its all on the pricey side but somehow i don't think his part-ex offer would be!

I might go and take a look and i have never actually driven a C350 CDI, so now's a good chance.

Anyone had time with a Merc with the 7g box? Seems to get mixed reviews on it- usual some good and others, it's not a patch on say the ZF 8 in the BMWs'. I will have to try a 330/5 D Touring (F31) for a comparison.

ZX10R -Thanks for the listing but already seen that one and dismissed it as it doesn't have heated seats/privacy glass options- and it's black- i prefer blues/greys/darker silvers!

That proves my point about spec, privacy glass isn't a big deal as you can easily get the windows tinted, the seats is a different issue.

The Mercedes 7 speed a good box smooth & works well, they need servicing every 40k or 5 years, also remember this was a competitor to the ZF 6 speed (the Mercedes 7 speed was introduced in 2005) the Mercedes 9 speed is easily on par with the ZF 8 Speed.

When you change the fluids get them to do a gearbox reset as this will enable the box to adapt to your driving style rather than work in the parameters of the previous owners.
