Which Xbox Do I Need?
Discussion
Been ages since I bought a new console (my 360 about 13 years ago!) but with an 8 and 12 year old in the house, I'm starting to get complaints that the 360 is too old now!
Kids want to be able to play Minecraft, Forza, Fifa and the eldest wants to get Fortnite as a load of his mates have it (I just want to play GTA 5!).
I'm looking at the Xbox Series S but the whole digital only thing has thrown me. Can I simply buy individual games I want such as those above? What's the benefit of game pass - is that access to loads of games as long as you're subscribed?
Cheers, Dave

I'd think a Series S was adequate. I believe the Series X has a more developed gaming processor, but due to the chip shortage they are incredibly hard to locate and cost an arm and a leg. I believe digital purchases stay with your account forever unless it gets banned or something along those lines.
I had game pass for a bit and it did seem like good value for money, it gave access to a lot of decent games for the monthly fee. I didn't play games enough to warrant keeping it after a few months. When I stopped the subscription the games and any save files stayed installed on my console, but I lost access to play them so any time I go onto them it prompts me to purchase them now.
I've currently got an Xbox One but hoping to upgrade to a series X one day in the future when I can just nip into a shop and buy one for £450 or whatever the MSRP is.

Series S would be fineKids want to be able to play Minecraft, Forza, Fifa and the eldest wants to get Fortnite as a load of his mates have it (I just want to play GTA 5!).

You can buy games individually
Gamepass is £10.99 a month and has a load of games some good, some less so, but Forza would come with it for instance as well as Halo and a load of Bethesda stuff
If you have never had it before there is a way to get it cheap for a year or more, check the Gamepass Hack thread
Your biggest issue will be finding a console unfortunately
My son has an S and is very happy with it. Just be aware the storage is limited and you'll offloading/downloading games constantly unless you get some external storage (the games you've listed would probably fill it). I bought him the official 1Tb Seagate drive but it's eye wateringly pricey.

The sales on the online store are really good these days and Gamepass is an absolute steal for what you get. I haven't bought a game on disk in years.

tbh when it came to buying Battlefield I had the choice of schlepping to a shop and grabbing standard for £69.99 or CD Keys getting the gold edition for £68.99 and it means I don't have to change disks

My son has an Xbox One (with the disc drive) and also has Game Pass. Think of Game Pass as a sort of Netflix for games. He doesn't own any games on disc - every one he has is either a Game Pass game, or a digital download. He's also got a 4tb external drive for storage.Kids want to be able to play Minecraft, Forza, Fifa and the eldest wants to get Fortnite as a load of his mates have it (I just want to play GTA 5!).

I think you'd be fine with the digital only model - if you can't get hold of the latest one, the Xbox One plays all your games you mentioned.

Yes you can buy individual games via the Xbox dashboard/store and also subscribe to Games pass which will give access to a library of games for as long as you sub to it.Kids want to be able to play Minecraft, Forza, Fifa and the eldest wants to get Fortnite as a load of his mates have it (I just want to play GTA 5!).

Getting an S isn't an issue at the moment, if you want to get the X then stock will being available starting next week through Dec but it's limited and each pulse will go quickly, there is also the Xbox All Access subscription service that combines a console + games pass sub for a monthly payment.

For my S I just bought a standalone 1TB drive for around £40 and formatted it when attaching to the Xbox. It's fine for storage but if you download the games that are specifially for the S or X then you need to move them to the internal storage to be able to play them. At the time I bought mine the offical Seagate drive cost nearly as much as the console.CotswoldsChap said:
