Some might have seen my previous busted iPad thread.... happily, closed out of the insurance claim with no ill effects according to eSure.

But christ I am having a hard time choosing what to replace it with. Essentially it boils down to this:

Tab S7 8GB/256GB - £589
Apple Refurbished 2020 iPad Pro 11" 6GB/128GB - £550

I always go for Apple refurbs if I can and the damn things are so powerful now, the hardware well exceeds what the OS will allow you to do, so no qualms about getting something a little older. I could even go for a 2018 iPad because the A12X and A12Z are basically the same, but the 2020 model does get more RAM and a few other trinkets.

Truth is I am not particularly engrossed in the apple ecosystem these days. I don't own any other apple stuff save for an old Air 2 that the wife uses.(which amazingly despite being released in 2014, got the latest iOS15 upgrade! and is still useable!). I am not actually that interested in apple stuff at all, but can't deny they pretty much set the standard for these things. But moving to android is sorely tempting.

If I go iPad I know what I am getting will be a solid experience. The hardware is always lovely. The software could do with being less restrictive, but at least they seem to be able to make things run like melted butter for years on end, and in that sense, they're actually quite a good value proposition.

With the Tab, well they're running smoothly for now. But in 2-3 years time? I'd quite like to keep it, I am not someone who upgrades every 1-2 years, which seems to be how a lot of people operate. I also see quite a lot of posts about perceived QC issues with the LCD screen on the S7. Many proclaim it to be quite warm or yellow looking. It sounds more like that's how they're calibrated rather than it being a defect. But I don't think I can do with something like that as I do like to use LR mobile to edit photos.

Anyone got experiences to share?

I have one, it's great, no issues with the screen or anything else.

My only complaint is that lots of the apps aren't optimised for the larger screen, but for me it's far more important to be able to pick it up and have it behave exactly like my phone apart from the bigger screen, so I'd rather have that than buy something that isn't Smasung, let alone isn't Android.

My main apps that I use are generally... Youtube, web browser, video streaming (Netflix, Disney+,Amazon,BBC etc), reddit, Lightroom, Instagram and notes. I think most of those seem to work fine. In fact, I think IG works better than on the iPad which for some bizarre reason still loads as a phone style rectangle in the middle of the screen!

What apps do you have trouble with?

It's daft stuff, mostly if you put it in Landscape and often if you then try to type something because the keyboard pops up. Facebook and Twitter are quite poor. It's fine really, half the time it's not that it works poorly it's that there's loads more that could be on the screen if it was optimised even a little bit. You shouldn't feel like you're using a big phone, but often you do.

It's great for watching video on, emails and the like. I really like the Google Keyboard with hand writing recognition and Office 365 apps are really good on it, so it's great for getting stuff done for me.

I don't do twitter or FB...so no problem then!

I have the S7+. Excellent tablet and the DeX mode is very good. Looks like windows 10 and you can use it with a keyboard and mouse. Alternatively, plug it in via USB-C into a docking station for the big screen, still using keyboard and mouse.

Both myself & my wife own S7+ tablets, excellent devices. Only drawback is the woefully poor battery life.

Yes, think that is a bit of a complaint about the S7+ the OLED screen saps quite a bit of juice and it is locked into always running 120Hz or 60Hz. The smaller one has an LCD display and run adaptive refresh so its kinder to its battery!

I have an S7+, and have no battery issues. This is my third (fourth?) Galaxy Tab, and I only upgrade due to breakage, rather than reduction in performance.
