1996 993 MOT failure
Discussion
I’ve imported my 993 from the Middle East and as it does not have a catalyst it has failed it’s MOT. As it has not got a full wire harness, nor sensor nor cat it looks like a lot of work to get it emissions compliant. I did read somewhere that as it was built without a cat and I have a Porsche letter confirming that it should not be tested against the post 1996 emissions regulations for the MOT. Anyone got any advice as it looks like I may have to scrap it.
Point them in the direction of the MOT handbook
Personal imports
A personal import must be tested according to its date of first use. However, if you’re shown a letter from the vehicle manufacturer proving that the engine does not meet British emission standards you must test to the next lower emission standard.
For example, a 1995 car first used in Gambia with a letter from the engine manufacturer stating the engine number and showing that the engine cannot meet catalyst emission limits, you must use the non-cat limits of carbon monoxide (CO) 3.5% and hydrocarbons (HC) 1,200ppm.

Does the place you've taken it only do MOTs? I never go anywhere other - shame you are far away from Alfold MOT as they know what they are doing. They were testing a 959 that has come back from the US in there last week.
Otherwise I'll have it from you - 500 notes ok?
Why ? the MOT test is the same at any garage everyone follows the same rules - its how they are applied. We would much rather cars pass and go, the last thing we want is more work. Besides what's to say a garage that only MOT's doesn't have a friend who can fix your car and take back handers for failing them.Otherwise I'll have it from you - 500 notes ok?

Unfortunately there are many less scrupulous garages.stevemcs said:

Nothing - but you must admit much less likely. The key point is that MOT-only specialists do tend to know the rules better, as it's all they do.Expatboy said:

Using secondhand parts, and given the value of 993s, I think you are far, far from scrap. I think you could get it done for £2-3K. Aso worth checking it has had the wiring loom recall done, it may solve your wiring issue. Not sure about the DME, but the ones without a CAT had an adjustable pot in the engine bay for the emissions. Gassing Station | Porsche Classics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
