I want to use a 28" computer monitor instead of a TV with my Sky Q mini box. Sky Q has an HDMI output which I will use for the monitor and an optical output which I can use for a soundbar. The monitor will need 4x screw holes in the back for TV stand mounting.

1. Any suggestions for what type/brand of monitor? I imagine a "gaming" monitor should handle TV picture without problems and easily match the resolution of Sky Q mini. I want the monitor to drop automatically to standby when there's no signal.

2. Any suggestions for a good, small soundbar that will automatically drop itself down to standby when there's no signal? I don't want to be faffing about switching everything on and off.

3. I've never previously owned a sound bar. Can the Sky Q remote control adjust the soundbar volume without a TV in between? Or are soundbars available with their own remote for volume adjustment?

3. A big question - will picture and sound be in sync? I think the Sky Q mini has some adjustment.

Any tips greatly appreciated for this hybrid setup.

Further investigation reveals,
  • Sky Q mini box has a 3.5mm AV output as well that can run some decent computer speakers although I can't see a way to adjust the volume of that AV output which appears to be fixed. Is this correct?
  • On the other hand Sky Q remote can be trained to adjust the volume on a proper soundbar.
