Moving house in January and looking at TV/Internet provider options. There are 2 main companies here, one provide DSL and fibre, but say we'd be on their "secure and reliable copper network", with a max speed of 163 Mbit/s, so presumably DSL. The other provide cable and claim to be able to supply up to a Gigabit at our address.

160 is fast enough for us, and the Mrs is convinced a lot more people complain about the cable provider. I'm inclined to go for the cable one so we can upgrade speed if we want to, but other than speed are there advantages to one over the other?

The problem I encounter with DSL alot is that the speeds they advertise are very rarely the speeds you get, it tends to run off the BT network for the majority, so then its all dependant on the distance from the exchange, and then how old the cables are.

I'd look at the upload speeds as well. 160Mbit is enough for many people, so upload may be a good differentiator.

If you've only got two suppliers, opportunities to get new user discounts may be limited, so I suppose look at the long term likely pricing rather than introductory offers?

Given the wording of the OP and the location in the profile, if doesn't sound like they are in the UK so the potential downsides of being on xDSL on Openreach doesn't apply...

Non UK so not BT, but the DSL provider is KPN, who I think own the main telephone network, so I guess wouldn't have the issue of the ISP and the hardware owner each saying it's the other's fault.

160ish down and 20 up on DSL, or a tenner more for 300 down and 30 up (both with similar TV packages), so not to bothered about the price difference, more concerned with how stable a connection it as my wife appears to be wifi enabled and doesn't operate properly if she loses signal hehe

178 down and 60 up according to Ookla in my current rented place about 500m down the road and also with KPN.

There are other suppliers but they're much smaller firms and will presumably be using the phone lines that I think are owned by KPN.

I’d look at upload speeds as well. I’m on symmetrical fibre, 500mbps and the upload speed makes a huge difference, especially now my backup solution is Onedrive and my documents folder is synced there.

I tried 1Gbps and my networking equipment is generally 2x2 and can’t take advantage of that speed. There are only 3 of us in the household though, so if you have more people you might.

I tried 150mbps, but 500mbps is noticeably better. Multi gigabyte updates for laptops and gadgets delivered in seconds etc. Its much more of a ‘on demand’ affair, hardly postpone or plan updates now because they download so quickly.
