Not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes

I have bought an old marking gauge, and want to make it back to its former glory.

Casting my mind back to my school wooodwork classes I am sure this should have a butterfly head.

Any idea of what I should be looking for, or even a supplier
?

I have googled no end of butterfly screw, wingscrew, wing bolt etc. it is early English so UNF? Whitworth? I want a screw I can fasten by hand,so knurled thumbscrew would do too

Looks like quarter UNC or Whitworth, both 20 TPI. Thread form is different but you won't notice on a thread that small.

thanks. any clues =on a supplier?

I could cut a washer, nice suggestion, , but then that's some welding, which is above my paygrade.

If you aren't a welder then braze or silver solder would be better options.

You need a thread gauge or thread file to find out what pitch it is, they aren't expensive and a useful tool for life.
Marking gauges came with thumb turns and also slotted for a screwdriver so it's highly likely an original. Get the makers name and google it.

Or any screw thread of the right pitch, or a piece of paper that you can touch the dirty threads on to get a set of marks that are far easier to measure than holding scales against the physical threads.
