Rolling Road Session Next Saturday
Discussion
The Chim 450 is off to Nobles at Chesterfield on Saturday for 2 hours on the Dyno. What kind of BHP / torque figures should I be expecting given the following:
1) The car is running really well at the moment
2) It has an ACT induction kit and K&N filter
3) Recently fitted with a new coil and 8.5mm Magnacores.
4) No pre cats and a free flow sports main cat
5) Its fitted with a slightly spicier cam than standard (Don't know which)as well as a TVR power chip to match.
Any input welcome
Dave

Hi.
I've only ever run one 450 Chim at Nobles and it made 258bhp and 267lbs.ft flywheel.
see the graph here (copy and paste. 50megs doesn't allow remote linking) http://tvr.50megs.com/images/dunwilchim450.jpg

Dave, what are you expecting? you had the chance to have the car painted in TVR'S fastest colour, (YELLOW)
whatever the result of the rolling road you will always wonder what your car could have produced, (if only) too late now mate, never mind, red is the second fastest colour so it should be a fairly good result.

As a matter of interest, how much are they charging ?
I'm probably going to change a few things on mine & would be interested in getting a dyno readout before the work is done. Cheers.
Did you notice much difference after the change in induction & filter ?

55jnj, you will have to contact them for a quotation. After fitting the induction kit, leads and coil, the difference was very noticable. It was a lot crisper and responsive and felt torquier.

I suppose you are right in theory Trev. The trouble is, in practice, the weight of the 10 million or so insects that are perminently glued stuck to your car, thinking its a giant sunflower, does slow it down a lot. Even though the majority of them have wings, it doesn't do the aerodynamics any good either.

Did you have a power run done before fitting the stuff though? and were you correcting a fault that brought the power increase or is it a genuine increase over an otherwise good healthy car?
Many power increases are quoted as part of a fault fixing excercise, these aren't actually power increases in the real sense at all as the original car was underperforming compared to what it should have been doing...
Still at least you have a benchmark std chim 450 to compare to (though the rollers have been recalibrated since and I'm sure they read higher nowadays, Nobles assure me they don't but every car I've had there since has produced more power than the previous cars ... I reckon they're 5% higher now)
Thanks Trackcar. Unfortunately the car wasn't tested before the bits and pieces were put on. However, at the time, the car was running well anyway. Which bit actually made the difference, I don't know. Its probably a combination of everything. Thanks for giving me a bench mark to work off.
The only reason I'm having the car tested is to satify my own curiosity really. I just hope it doesn't bring to light any problems there may be.

Can someone please explain to me what you get for your money in a 2hr Dyno session? Is it just the readout figures or does it include a tune up also?
You beat me too it, I was reading this thread and considering posting the same question.
Do you hire the session to do your own mods and re-test within the time period?
Dave the novice

Well if there's a fault going to show up it'll do it in the harsh environment of the dyno, so in that respect it's great for finding any weak spots in your ignition system.
You can also monitor the mixture during the run and make sure nothing is amiss there .. as you can see on the link i posted this chim was excellent right to the top of the rev range, rather casting doubt on the belief that TVRs run weak at the top end, no 500s I've tested have run weak at the top end either ...
you can also do a timing swing on the dizzy to make the best spread of power.
other than that there's not a lot you can do,but it does mean that you'll either get your car back as good as it can be in it's current spec, or a list of things to put right if it underperforms.

trackday,
I see by the graph youve put up that it didnt run lean which is excellent news, wold have liked to have seen the duty cycle on that run or a graph for a 300+BHP 5.0L. Ive gone safe and have bought a new set of 310cc/Min injectors for £78 inc P+P, these are good for 400BHP so I will have no problems with fueling, well, it would be nice if they did start struggling

Bizarrely, given the above, the BHP figure is high (240 is about par) suggesting it was being taken to rather higher revs than normal - I suspect that it's more to do with quirks of the road though.
If I were you (on the road that I was on last year) I'd be happy with 260ish (but again I couldn't really say what you might expect from your changes).
