Police have dealt with 250 suicide bomb scares since the July 7 atrocities, Britain's top policeman has revealed.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said there had been 250 incidents since the attacks when police thought they may have been dealing with a suicide bomber.
And he indicated that on seven occasions police had been on the brink of acting.
"I know there have been 250 incidents since July 7 where we have considered whether we are seeing a suicide bomber," he said.
"I know that when I last saw it there had been seven times when we have got as close to calling it as 'that' and we haven't."
Speaking on Channel Four News Sir Ian said last week's killing of Jean Charles de Menezes had been a "dreadful mistake".
But he said there were suicide bombers out there and the police had to protect the public.
Sir Ian also said he was certain the men behind last week's failed attack would be caught.
"We will undoubtedly find these people," he said.
And he said there was "no direct link" between those attacks and the July 7 bombings, although there were similarities.

That figure doesnt suprise me at all. I commute to london daily and often hear annoucement for people to return to their bag immediately (twice already this week). The other day Kings Cross was evacuated because of a suspect bag/suitcase - some prat had left their bag in the main area because they didnt want to take it into WH Smiths. People really are quite dim.
