Idle timing for 5.0L
Discussion
Hi all,
anyone know how many degrees the 500 should idle at? Im really after what it should be with the vacuum connected but with and without would be superb, I know my 3.5 liked it at 12-15 but it should have been sitting at 8-10, Im not worried about setting it for the maximum as this is going to be a fully mapped setup so Im not worried about having it set too far advanced,

Glad you asked, coz I could do with the settings as well. I ran my Griff for the first time in two years yesterday after a full rebuild, and guess what timing strobe packed up. Now have a loan one courtesy of Mr Snap On, but some acurate settings would be great. Bible is a bit vague.
Sounds awesome BTW!! (no pre cats and sports exhaust)

The reason why the bible is a bit vague is that TVR and others have quoted so many differing figures that it is not an exact science. The variations in engines is another factor which means that there isn't an exact value that is right for every car. Any figures are more of a starting point. Static timing should be 8 deg BTDC for normal use and 4 deg for regular U/L. Very much a starting point. It is then adjusted to acheive required CO figures and stop and pinking/pre-detonation.
trackcar,
Im using a megasquirt ECU, triggered off the crank, got to make the rear pulley on the crank, thats not used, into a 4 toothed flag, but thats easy to do. Then the Megasquirt will fire the MSD amp and coil, then to the dizzy to send it to the correct plug. I could use the standard coil and amp but the MSD is far superior. Again I could go for coil packs, would be better than the standard TVR setup, but I have an MSD so I will go for that route. Your right about not locking the dizzy, all Ive done is removed the hall sensor inside.
This is a really cheap way to gain some power from these engines,
Megasquirt is about £180 if you want to go the MSD route then thats £150 ish, or coil packs and wasted spark could be a bit cheaper if you pick up a second hand set off ebay, then you could sell the TVR dizzy on ebay for silly money:-)

Steve,
I'm not critisicing your book, just want it to run as best as poss before getting Mr Adams to do his stuff!!
I would like to do a couple of hundred miles, change the oil, then pop it on the dyno. The timing needs to be as good as poss for the first few miles.
Also, I would like to chat to you about your alloy parts for my S. Perhaps you could email me with some details of what you can supply.
Thanks
Mike

Indeed I have an Omex system that i took in p/ex against some labour i was owed .. no exactly intuitive is it? and bloody expensive compared to the MSpark. I see the MSpark as a good cheap way to go .. would love to see your install and ask you a few q's one day ..meet for a beer maybe?
