It does make you wonder what is the point of a government department fining another government department when the money comes from the taxpayer.

The point is that no individual should be held accountable for their acts or omissions.

Cue "systemic error", "procedural problem", "don't want a culture of blame" and many other phrases such that the people involved are teflon coated.

It’s always made me scratch my head

Gov Dept A takes Gov Dept B to Court for X alleged breach

Gov Dept A spends a fortune prosecuting

GoV Dept B spends a fortune defending

The Court system and legal fees cost a fortune

The full cost of A & B & C plus fine X are all met by you and me

Mad when you look at it like that

To be fair the ICO have to do this, otherwise Government departments have no incentive to protect data.

But the people involved should be sacked/disciplined.

Nobody is found guilty of anything, everyone gets invitations to legal firms' parties.

It's all good.

Do you think there was a corridor meet - ok if you transfer £500,000 to us?

I think the chances of one government department talking to another one are as close to zero as makes no odds.
