McGuiness: Family & Autism
Discussion
I was wondering if anyone else watched this and what they thought of it?
I wasn’t going to watch it as I have a severely Autistic son. I generally find most TV shows completely ignore the severe end of the spectrum. Which generally makes me quite frustrated because it feels a bit misrepresentative.
My wife twisted my arm to watch it though and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s not a big sympathy push for them as I have seen some people suggest it would be. It’s of course very much from their point of view but the things that Paddy said are all things I have said over the last 3 years. Same thing for my wife I thought it was a very real and honest look into what it’s like to accept your situation.
The section meeting Paul Scholes I thought was great as it highlighted the more severe end of the spectrum and that really can happen to anyone.
It’s worth a watch if the subject interests you.

I'll give this a whirl tonight on your recommendation. My youngest boy (middle child) got his diagnosis at 8 although he is high functioning. My daughter (12) is now showing signs of struggling with certain things at school so my ex and I are to discuss if we should seek diagnosis for her.
I'll chat with her as well and see how she feels about it.

There is some chat about this programme on the Autism Thread if you are interested.
As someone with experience of children with high functioning Autism, I thought it was a good programme - it was the first time I have seen anyone, other than my wife, able to explain the condition in such a straightforward, simple to understand way, something that is very important in explaining it to the general public.
